Default NT01 vs Hoosier ; performance differential?

All things being equal...

What is potential time advantage between these tires on a 2 minute track?

I think 1-2 seconds, the warmer the bigger the difference, Hoosiers I think stay better longer.

NT01 is about 3-4 sec off a fresh Hoosier for a 2min lap.

BUT, thing equalize after about 6-8 heat cycles, and then the NT01s stay consistent till they cord. R6 drops radically after about 10 cycles.

NT01 also has more meat on it. They're probably the best DE tire value out there right now.

Irrespective of time, side wall construction is different impacting handling characteristics which may or may not suit a particular driving style.

+1. Hoosiers like more negative camber compared to NT-01, so the optimum set-up is different.

In my experience, the Hoosiers have fairly floppy sidewalls, and need at least -3 degrees of static camber on a McStrut suspension. I am still experimenting with NT-01's, but it looks like theey are more happy at about -2 degrees. I am now trying a compromise setting at about -2.5, as I also have two sets of these mounted up.

Dave, Nittos are crap when they are new; lots of squirm. They are great once the thread is gone, but it's a long time to wait.

You should try the BFG R1 as an alternative to Hoosiers. The regular R1 only comes in 285/30 for the rear at the moment, but the R1 S is now starting to trickle in in the 315/30 size. The regular R1 seems to last forever though.

I might be imagining this. But I believe that the NT01s made before the R888 came out are a different tire than the NT01s sold in the last couple of years. I've been running them for a long time, and the improvement I used to see as the tires got closer to the end of their lifespan isn't there anymore. I've heard the same thing about the reintroduced RA1s, and it makes me suspect that Toyo/Nitto is using components of the R888 in all three tires for the sake of manufacturing economy.

Again, I could be 100% wrong. But that's how it's felt with the last two or three sets of NT01s I've run.

How do the R1s handle driving on the streets/highway to and from the track? The NT01s didn't have a problem at all.

I have a big pile of RA1 335/18 that fit 997.2 RS rears if anyone wants to buy some. (Pair with new NT01 fronts). $200/tire + shipping from Palm Beach, FL.

No tread for water evacuation, so it better be DRY roads.

I've tried this experiment for a few years. Sucked. Big compromise and then neither setup is right for any tire. Just pick one. Also, please remember your braking points for each tire....don't mess that up. For me the R6s completely changed my braking points vs the Nittos.

I understand that many people feel that NT01's are squirmy when new and the tires get stickier as they wear. I have gone through 4 or 5 sets and I have not had this experience at all. My new NT01's have been great. I do not feel they get much stickier as they wear. For a fairly sticky tire that costs $1,000/set delivered, and virtually unlimited heat cycles, they are a great value.
