Default next safety upgrade -- halo seat or full cage?

I am looking to add more safety items to the car. I can only get one currently and am trying to decide between a halo seat or a full cage.

which would you choose given the current safety items already on the car?
  • OEM 4pt cage
  • sparco evo seats
  • 6pt harness

I have a hans device I already use as well.

TIA

I personally would never drive a car on the street that has a full roll cage. If your car is still street driven, I'd go for the halo seat.

Smile Street & Halo Seat

I found the factory seat belts impossible to use with my Cobra EVO Pro Fit GT (25mm wider) Carbon Fiber seat. So it's 6 point harness for me. I drive on the street occasionally. Note this Halo seat does not seem to obstruct my vision...the mirrors seem 100% functional.

I also have a Heigo "bolt in" roll cage. It's only disadvantage on the street is that you need to be a bit of a contortionist to get in and out of the car...even though the seat is on sliders. To make entry and egress easier, I have a detachable steering wheel, no air bag...so I am sure my car is not street legal in the fullest sense of the concept.

You write, "I have a hans device I already use as well." Yet you are considering 5-6 point harnesses? Doesn't a HANS require a 5-6 point harness? I use the Schroth harnesses, designed for use with the HANS. The shoulder belts are 3" to 2" around the HANS back to 3" to the roll bar anchor tubing.

Any or all safety equipment will be a plus. For the street, the factory belts certainly are convenient, and we can feel pretty secure that they work in conjunction with the air bag.

Think of where this car will be in 5 years? SCCA clubracing? trackdays? returned to a streetcar?

Safety system starts at the seat. Do some research on seat types, FIA 5 year, FIA 10 year, halo seats and full-containment seats. Pick your compromise and go from there.

A cage will offer you nothing if the rest of the safety system is not there. Sometimes you can add cage elements like start with a 4 pt bolt in then add bars. But before you do that research cages. There is a reason for welding. In general bolt-ins are a lot harder to build as safe as weld in.

Unless/until you are ready to trailer the car everywhere, skip the full cage, and go with a halo seat. As already mentioned, a full cage presents safety issues unless you wear a helmet.

Put in the full cage and stop driving it on the street. The halo seat will reduce your side visibility on the street (unsafe) and the cage isn't safe without a helmet. If this is really a dedicated track car, just go ahead, bite the bullet and finish the prep. Everyone will thank you...except the beneficiary of your life insurance policy.
