That barrier he hit was SOLID. I hope he's okay.

Do you think his obvious bad condition was the reason they didn't replay it much? They certainly didn't show extracting him from the car, which is always a bad sign.

Dang.

This official statement from the ACO organisers just came to us. Quote "At 15,09 today, the No 95 Aston Martin Vantage GTE driven by Allan Simonsen of Denmark, exited the track at high speed at the Tertre Rouge corner, on the third lap of the race. The driver was immediately attended to on the scene by the doctors from the Automobile Club de l'Ouest's Medical Service. In a serious condition, Allen Simonsen was immediately transferred to the Circuit Medical Center, where he died soon after due to his injuries."

Wow. So sad. Le Mans has claimed a few before. Perhaps it's time for some safer barriers? His car hit the tree beyond the fence.

Edit: just saw Courtshark said the same thing above

From what they showed earlier, the tree behind the barrier was the problem

Bad spot to impact
If the Armco was a bit further from the tree it may have saved him

Horrible
I feel for his family

According to Jamie Campbell-Walter, Simonsen's family have asked AMR not to withdraw from competition today. What an act.

That is a passionate racing family, I'm 100% sure this is what he would want and I know I would too.

What a sad start, puts a somber, nite for the whole race but, sadly, this is racing. Saw it and the only "good" thing is that no one else was involved, he just had a bit of a slide and then over corrected.

Godspeed Jamie.

Sad news. This will cast a dark cloud over the rest of the race. With all the advances in safety over the years it's too easy to think that the driver can just walk away after a wreck like this. Racing is still a dangerous sport which will never be risk free. RIP Allan...

RIP, Allan. He was one of the true elite GT racers in the world.

Last death in the race was twenty-seven years ago...

Liking the closing speed 991 RSR is able to generate on the 997 RSR and 458:

LMP cars flashing by like freight trains scary impressive.
