Dry Sump Kit for M96 and M97 engines
#47
Been a while since I updated this thread. I am within a couple of weeks of starting this and recording oil pressures at idle and driving. Waiting on AimSport sensors. Hopefully, this mod eliminates oil pressure issues. If it provides pressure as designed, then any failure would be because of the original m96/7 based motor design.

Shop has picked back up on my dry sump project lately. My 3.6L motor went and I bought a 3.8L X51 crate motor.
The motor will end up a high compression 4.0L with a new dry sump kit. Currently test fitting and designing pumps, mounts, plates, casting pieces, hoses and a tank. Should be a retrofit kit when completed, but it will be $$$. Still a lot cheaper than installing a GT3 engine and trans in a Boxster though.

What was your failure on the 3.6? Which oiling mods did you try out? I suspect the deep sump pan, accusump, etc.. will all eventually fail to stop the oiling nightmare. The X-51 m97 is supposed to fix all this without a dry sump. How high would the compression be on your 3.8? 12.5:1? Run ethanol and all will be well. My kit has taken me some time to get configured. No space to work with...
I don't know why I didn't just use a

Well, it is up and running. Works like a charm, no drops in oil pressure under any circumstances, so far.
Not too bad on the cost. Better than a blown up motor because of oiling issues. The only thing my system lacks next to the dfi is direct injection. Oh well, I will feed it E85 and a motec and get my horsepower back, hopefully.
I designed the kit on my own and did all of my own engineering with some excellent advice from a friend. There are a couple of changes I would make but they are very, very minor!
Thanks

While the OP has apparently abandoned this thread, the dry sump for M96/97 has some progress to report!
