Default First DE -insurance question

First DE coming up this weekend at Mid-Ohio -have another question:

My insurance agent says I don't need any extra insurance as my std policy covers me. Does this sound right?

If I need additional insurance, any estimate on the cost or advice on the best rates?

Thanks,

Will have to consult with the cartoon character expert from your last thread!

Dont believe a word he says. Really.
It's unlikely you'll have an incident in your first event, but do a search and you'll find lots of details.

If your Agent said you are covered, then you are. He is their representative and basically he just covered you verbally. But would that hold up if something happened? Did he show you in writing in your policy or would he be willing to write something for you? In the old days, (10 yrs ago) policies specifically would not cover racing or competition. Now, most policies have a clause about not covering you when using the car on a course that is normally used for racing. If you are a beginner, most clubs make your first event some classroom, theory and slow laps on the track to learn the line. So long as you are prudent and don't do something really stupid, you shouldn't have an off track excursion. That being said, there is alway risk in this activity. Can you afford to walk away from your car? The main thing is making yourself comfortable with that risk.

I double checked with my agent who spoke to the underwriter and confirmed in writing I was covered (Farmers). So it's not impossible.

in the past INS policies covered you if it was not a 'timed-speed event'... but a few years ago, most companies changed the language to exclude you at a facility were racing could occur. (or some language like that).

If they cover - I may use them just for that reason. My policy (different ins. company) says any facility where racing occurs is not covered. So even an accident during a parade lap at 35mph would not be covered for me.

One option below, if you feel you want to go that route. Ryan Straub does post on here, you can probably search and find more details about what his company offers.

But here's the link: http://locktonmotorsports.com/produc...onaffinity.com

Default Read the fine print . . .

You should have the latest version of your policy (sent with bills). It will list the exclusions. Look for wording like "a road surface used for timed and competitive events" or "private roads". These exclusions get "updated" over time. Such as one that appeared in 2011 . . .

... has been revised to indicate that "we' will not pay for "loss" to an "auto we insure" aising out of practice, perperaration or participation in any prearranged organized or spontaneous racing contest; speed contest; demolition contest; high perfomance driving; stunting activities; or similar activities, including such use while at a facility or course designed for such purposes.

i.e. drive the car on a track's road surface for any reason (even touring laps at highway speeds) and no coverage.

Westfield! They provide coverage for DEs- at least in Ohio. They are a sponsor at Mid Ohio.

I've not checked with mine since I started driving a dedicated track car, but in my early track days, I did check with State Farm and they told me at that as long as the event was not timed, I was covered. I have known people who have wrecked their car and had their claim covered. In one case it was a GT3 that the owner totalled. Insurance paid up. If your agent told you you are covered, you are covered.

How much is track insurance without having ontrackinsurance.com? Annually? Per event based?
