Poll: New Porsche 991/981 Track Cars - How do you rank these?
Ladies and Gents,
Whenever I have business questions, this seems to be the single best resource. I would like to throw out a topic for feedback from the DE/Racing people on here, as I am trying to get a feel for the market for new track day cars that you guys will be running over the next few years. As an enthusiast, I know what I would want but I don't know what everyone else wants.
We all put the idea up for discussion around here to create a car that is not heavily modified but is more of an "RS" type version car than what is available and the 3 versions, all in varying levels of buildout were:
- 2013 981 Cayman S with 3.8L - (3.8L DFI Conversion & Control Arms - $115K - very basic - maybe exhaust & roll hoop & harnesses)
- 2013 991 Carrera S with Power Kit - (991 X51, 7-speed manual, motorsport limited slip diff, roll hoop, camber & ECU flash/exhaust - $135K)
-2014 991 GT3 - (Low option GT3 As-is - $145K)
What cars bring what dollars and what is too much? These are not cars that we are advertising. These are expected amounts that the general public would have into their car if they came to any shop in the U.S with the various donor cars and asked someone like us or anyone else to create one of the above. I think that we can all agree that the GT3 seems to be the most car for the $ starting out at $132K BUT you can't get one with a manual transmission so then a question becomes whether or not a 991 S with Power Kit, Sport Plus and 7-speed manual is of interest to people since the new GT3 is PDK only.
I'm just curious and the forum is the best place to start.

A 3.8 Cayman would be a great car, but the new 991 has been improved quite a bit more than the Cayman due to it's significant increase in wheelbase. It will act a lot more like a Cayman and less like it's predecessors than ever before, IMHO.

NEVERTHELESS, you can't buy a 3.8L in a Cayman and I know what I would want but that's because I wait patiently for people to call asking for the "Frankenstein transplant." I will always love the idea of a near 400rwhp Cayman but the new car's agility and increased front grip is a big plus over previous generations. I still feel thought that there will be those that love the 911 and those that love the Cayman and they will never row the same boat.

I think as a track car the 3.8 transplanted Cayman would be great. A friend of mine just bought one with PDK from Deman and another friend has Speedsport doing the same thing.
BUT, for the PCA racers out there, would this not bump you into some sort of GT class? Would the car be competitive in such a class? I have no idea,....just asking.

I find it odd how few Caymans are sold compared to 911s. Some months, just a few are sold in the whole country. They may become collectable someday like a 914-6. They are certainly unappreciated.
But for the money and the value (resale) you can't beat the GT3.

Bunch of pussies, the ultimate Cayman would be the 991 GT3 engine - PDK and all in the 981 Cayman chassis.
