Default What is your favorite gear lube?

So, I'm on my third ring and pinion in the Banana in 6 years (901 trans). This last one shows signs of the gear lube breaking down as they bearings have some wear too. Obviously, the pinion is a goner. This was running Mobil 1 for about 2 years.

What is everyone's favorite gear lube?

We run Swepco 201 gear Oil in the 901 with the limited slip. Not cheap but seems to work good.

Swepco 201 or Swepco 210. Bruce Anderson and Jerry Woods found the only gear oil that would allow the ring and pinions to live in the Garrettson 935 was Swepco.

You shouldn't use a synthetic in a 901, 915, or 930 transmission unless you are double clutching all the time. Even then the balk ring syncros in these transmissions don't work well with synthetics.

Good advice here.

All Porsche syncronizer transmissions: 901-915-930, get Swepco #201 so they function correctly without premature wear. Plus, this stuff is made from very good base stocks and contains an excellent EP additive package to protect the R & P.

The later transmissions which use the Borg-Warner syncro design, get Delvac.

GL-5 lubricants are not all the same so one really must rely on some long-term experience.

Just switched to Kendall non limited slip additive stuff from Swepco. My R&P looked like that. I added an electric pump and trans cooler to my 901. That should limit the heat damage. Without running the pump, the trans temp pegged the gauge (over 300 degrees). Now when I run the pump, it mirrors the motor temp. Seems to be working very well.

I've had good results with Motul Gear FF. My diff temp gauge maxes out at 320 F and the gauge is regularly maxed out. Per my class rules, I cannot use an oil cooler (motor or diff). I had many diff failures when using Mobil 1 and RedLine but never had an issue once I switched to Motul Gear FF. It is expensive for oil but much cheaper than rebuilding a diff.

Here is another question for you guys then - the Swepco 201 is a 30+ year old formula. Nothing better has been developed since?

Matt,

I wouldn't be surprised if Swepco 201 and 210 have been tweaked over the years. Just because the name is over 30 years old does not mean the product has not been improved since then.

In any case, no one has developed a lube for specifically for balk ring syncros since that was a Porsche design from 50 years ago.
