Default Hoosier R6 Tire Separation Problem: Hankook V Hoosier

[B] Here is a pic of the tire separation problem that has occurred on my Hoosier R6. This is the first tire that I had this happen to and Hoosier defected the tire out. Howver, i now have 2-more of the 275-35-18's doing the exact same thing. Nine (9) other people at Sebring were having similar problems with their R6's also. On the last 2 tires, Hoosier informed me that I must send them back to the dealer that i bought them from.

Problem is, that I bought them from an independent dealer of the Tire Rack who buys them and sells them at the track for a premium (2-Had Tire Rack Heat Cycle Stamps) and I can't seem to track him down.

Ready to wield a sword and do battle, I contacted the Tire Rack and informed them of the situation. To my surprise...Tire Rack acted like it was no problem and actually sent me a Fed-Ex call tag yesterday for the tires. I had to buy 4-new ones ($1450) but they indicated that they will issue a credit (or partial credit ?) to my credit card when they get the defective tires back.

The tires only have about 3-4 heat cycles on them and I will be most anxious to see how the Tire Rack / Hoosier handles the return. We pay a few extra bucks at the Tire Rack, but if they treat me well on these tires it is definitely worth the extra $. I'll keep a posting of how the defect process worked out.

BTW, the Hankook 275/40-17 C51's are now sold out everywhere, and i was told it would be May 2013 before they would be available again. I really like the Hankooks but it is a real hassle to not be able to get replacement rears. So, It looks like the 48-Hours will be Hankooks...I hope to hell they hold up

Cheers!! [B]

I had that same thing happen to 2 Hoosiers and I saw someone else with the same problem last Dec.
I filled out a paper, I guess it was a refund request. A year later I haven't heard a thing. If Hoosier is providing the warranty, don't hold your breath.
I would be nice if someone else would produce an equal tire. They need some real competition if they are even going to stand behind their product.

Good luck.

Is this only happening on their DOTs or are people seeing this with the R80/R100 slicks also?

Default Look at the Top of Middle Tire

Hey Analog Mike,

Look at the top of the middle tire. I have had 3-of these do this in the last 2-years. The 2-that I sent back today were not as bad as this one, but it did have "big warts" bubbled out all over the tread surface. Production date was 14-12. Could not drive the car over 40 miles an hour without fear that the suspension was going to blow up.

So far, Tire Rack has been very helpful, even picked up the return freight. Curious to see how they handle the warranty.

A few years ago, I sent one back to Tirerack, and they sent it back to Hoosier. After many phone calls over 6 months, they agreed to credit 1/2 cost for new Hoosier. They said I had underinflated it, and that that had caused the separation. I was using 35 hot. Changed to 38-40 hot per their recommendation, and have had the same problem. Mine split at the corner, not a delamination like yours.

I had the same thing happen to two rears and a front R6 this past summer with 5 heat cycles. Must have been a bad batch I guess. Threw them out and didnt event think about asking for a credit...darn it.

Well, as many NE guys are getting ready to buy their tires for the 2013 season, and there may be some 2012 leftovers in the NE Warehouses, any indication of DOT codes we should TRY to avoid? Thanks.

I am not buying my r6's for this year until the last second. All of these threads on the Hoosiers having issues are scaring me. I hope it was a small batch with these problems. Maybe I need to buy some hankook c51s

THIS is a delamination (Michelin, in a 150 mph turn)

I've had similar experiences on R6s where the tire seemed to be "cut" at or near the shoulder. I've been told by more experienced folks that it was likely due to running the tire at too low a pressure (~32psi). I'll be running them higher this season, but I already know what that feels like (from forgetting to check pressures before heading on track) and I HATE the feel of the car at higher pressures. Guess I'll have to learn to live with it though.

This issue is very real. Happened to me in December. Back then I thought I jumped one too many curbs, but this is looking like a manufacturing defect.

325/30/19, on its 10-12th or so heat cycle. Running 31psi hot which is how I've always run mine. As you can see, plenty of rubber left and nice, even wear across the tread surface. Except for that "pregnant" bump of course:

It appears the issue rears its ugly head over time--somewhere a bit past the tire's half life. Watch out for undue vibrations and check those tires after every session!!

What I've been told is, for a heavy car like a 997.2 RS (stock, not stripped), you should be running your Hoosier R6s at 34 - 36psi front and 36 - 38psi rear.
