Default truck advice sought

I have the following two vehicles in play. Time is important because the seller of the local 2001 has told me he has an offer from someone else which he turned down, the guy walked but now he's coming back. No reason to disbelieve him as he is friends with a very good friend of mine. My friend is familiar with the truck.

Okay, that truck is a 2001 F350 crew cab long bed 4x4 for $13,000.00 Loads of recent receipts which I like. garage kept. 180K on the clock. I drove it and it is clean, runs great and is local to me. 7.3 Powerstroke diesel

Second truck is a 2003 F250 4x4 Off Road with short bed and 149K miles. I have not scene this truck in person. It is 4 hours away. Price is $9700.00. 6.0 Powerstroke diesel. I am intriqued by this one but I don't have time to check it out before the other truck will sell....

Same color exterior and interior. What would you do? Punting is always an option too.
Thanks...

Agreed....I have a 2002 2WD F350 crew cab with a long bed and love it. I ordered it from the Factory back in late 2001.

...and the long bed. Since you won't be parking it in the garage there's no reason to get the smaller one. An extra 30k is nothing.

okay....common "knowledge" is to get the 7.3 no doubt....run forever with lots of upgrades available....however the race shop I use has a dually diesel with a 6.0....bought it with 200K on the clock.....its now past 400K with minimal issues....yes it "should" be a train wreck, but its not.... He gets 14mpg towing a 10K trailer....

I bought my 2010 Chevy Silverado 1500 with intent to tow....mostly on an open trailer.... I have a 2wd with the 5.3 engine and tow package (3.42).... on flat roads I get near 15mpg with an open trailer at 5000lbs or so.....if I draft behind a friend with a "big box" I have seen 19+mpg...the cylinder deactivation flat works.... no regrets.....

I used the lemon law on two 6.0 trucks. I wouldn't wish one on my worst enemy. They suck.

7.3 all day long, twice on Sundays.

6.0 is a gamble. They go cheap for a reason. A friend of mine takes me to the Indy auction every now and then and we shake our heads over the low prices 6.0s fetch. Cottage companies like "destroked" love the 6.0, I'm sure.

John, just get a Dodge Cummins and you'll have a great truck with a real diesel engine...I have had too many bad Ford/Navistar diesel truck problems to ever trust one again...We take very good car of our trucks as we tow horse trailers with them primarily. Have never been disappointed in any of our Dodge trucks...many hundreds of thousands of miles. The 7.3 was OK but down on power compared to the Cummins of the time. 6.0? Don't ask. Fords barely made it to 80K before we would sell them. I have no reason to like or dis-like any model of truck, that's just my real world experience with trucks that get worked hard but are well maintained.

John, I have a cummins longbed. 5.9 fuel economy 14 pulling 9K at 72 mph 21.5 highway. Great truck and I am trying to buy a new one, just waiting for them to arrive in dealers. Mine is listed here, they were supposed to have been out 6 weeks ago. I'm patient, but it running out. I thought about going to the new Ford, then decided I just can't do it...

If you get the Ford, that 7.3 is a workhorse. But the 6.0 had a lot of problems in its early years - ongoing issues. Resolved in later years. Stay away from early 6.0's. Also - Must check the steering and suspension carefully on any high mileage truck.

I know Scott's Dodge. Its a beauty. I bought mine because I liked his so much. His gets better milage than the new Gen 4 editions because the emissions stuff in the Gen 4 trucks really kills MPG. I think he's crazy to sell it.

His loss - your gain
