Default Fire Supresssion System

I am looking to put a 5.0l (10lb) fire system in my car w/ 3 to 4 spray nozzles. I was wondering what many of you guys use? The SPA system and the ESS system both look nice but is there any downsides and are there better systems out there?

Thanks

I have both the SPA and the Safecraft systems in respective race cars. I would recommend both.

I don't know how one would recomend a fire system unless one has had a fire. I've never had a fire so don't have a clue if mine even works.

Thanks for the recommendations Disasterman

Jittsl,

I guess I was looking at quality, installation ease, etc... Not just if they work.

The SPA AFFF systems come in both electronic and mechanical. Electronic systems are powered by a battery power pack independent of the car and can be triggered either from inside the cockpit, or externally by a corner worker using the provided internal and external buttons. The mechanical systems utilize pull cables (provided) to be activated. Both come with 6 nozzles so you have a lot of flexibility as far as placement. Information on both can be found below. AFFF is not corrosive to electronics and wiring and the SPA bottles can be serviced and refilled in the event they are discharged, whether intentionally or accidentally.

I've been debating between FE-36 and AFFF. I'm leaning toward Firebottles FE-36, but not certain enough to make the purchase yet.

I know of one water base systems that lost contents due to being left in the car below freezing in the padock and the contents froze. That is why I prefer Halon.

Since 2009 SPA has been filling systems with an anti-freeze AFFF which is effective down to 0*F. SPA recommends removing the bottle from the car in cases where it may be subjected to sub zero temperatures.

If you have a bottle that was last serviced prior to 2009, you should have it serviced. We are an authorized service center for SPA fire bottles.

That is a scary photo!

I don't know if mine suppresses fire, but I do know it will spew out a lot of foam. I uh, "tested" it once.

I know of 2 that froze and failed with little to show that they had leaked out. One was TD's and he did not know it was empty for many events. The other was in a 997 and the contents drained out soaked into the plush carpet and mats and dried out leaving little sign. I also know of someone that refilled his by dumping the small bottle in and closing the tank up. He failed to read the directions all the way through and did not get the "Add X amount of water" part.

Just keep in mind the water based systems need a bit more care than the Halon or FE-36 types.

Mark that is good to know that SPA is using an anti freeze. Do you know what they are using?
