Default 917-Style Shift ****

I always liked the the look of the wood shift ***** in the 908 and 917. The aluminum shift **** installed on the shifter was functional but boring. If I couldn't find a 917-style shift **** that would fit my Rennshift Shifter (915), I figured I would make one.

Well, I found what I was looking for in a wood shift ****. It is made by Zach Knall and I found him over on 914world.com. His username over there is "Vacca Rabite". The shift **** is a work of art! In case anyone is interested, he makes them for standard 915 shifters as well.

I think so too! It just feels better than the cold and sterile looking aluminum **** that it replaced. Heck, it's at least half the weight too!

Very cool. From the book Porsche 917. The Undercover Story, pg 113: "For a long race, the wooden ball was more comfortable for the drivers."

Yes.

As I heard it, the aluminum shift **** would get too hot while the wood shift **** stayed cool. I wonder how much heats makes it up the shift **** on a 915.

Maybe the wood shift **** is also more comfortable because it is not as hard.

You may well be correct. From pg 12: "The standard gearknob was a sphere turned from layers of what appeared to be birch ply - the reason appears to be that it didn't get hot from the heat conducted through the gear linkage!"

Functionality aside, IMHO it's a superb feature of the CGT interior.

The 917 is real. I'm not as sure about this shift ****.
