Could somebody explain why a 6 point belt manufactured a few years ago isn't valid for DE, while the factory belts installed over 20 years ago are?

Becuase SFI/FIA say they are only good for a certain amount of time and the auto manufacturer doesn't say anything about how long they are good for. Thank you lawyers.

Still perfectly legal for autocross use though - gives us solo guys a reliable stream of slightly-used belts for bargain basement pricing

SO if I put the three point on over the 6 point I'll be safe again...

I get that it is the rating bodies. And with the belts in race cars subjected to more UV because of no windows, and more exposure to the elements, I can get it. Just seems like the lawyers are killing fun.

G-Force will replace all of the webbing and bring them up to date for about 2/3 the cost of a new set. Go to their website.

Which IMO is about the dumbest thing ever. Thankfully, DE groups typically don't inspect manufature dates of race harnesses...

There is a reason they started making 6 point belts. Look at where the lower belt goes and then look up "testicular rupture"...

Time to chuck them...

Actually some regions do. I remember watching a very embarrassed instructor running around VIR trying to find a new set when they actually did check the date on his harness.

But yeah the age allowance on 3 point is weird.

The San Diego PCA club checks the dates on harnesses and will not allow you to run a DE with expired ones. I believe they even check for autocrosses and they won't let anyone wear a 3 pt with an expired 5 or 6 pt.

PCA Carolina's Region tech is a stickler on outdated belts too for DE. I don't believe the belt manufacturers recommend running both your stock seatbelt and a 5- or 6-point belt at the same time. Use one or the other.

Every PCA and NASA region I have instructed with checks the dates on harnesses. Some will let you use an SFI rated harness for 5 years from date of manufacture.

The current G-Force FIA rated harness is very reasonably priced and good for 5 years.

Kind regards,

Even if your region is not a stickler for checking dates know that the state police at some tracks, i.e. NJMP, check.
