Default Rennline Tie downs/Jack Plates question

just ordered the Rennline front tie downs for my 996 track car. In the instructions it says to have them point to the opposite front wheel. does this mean they want you to criss cross the ratchet straps? I've read differing opinions about crossing the straps. I spoke to MACS tie downs and they said they do not like crossing.

Appreciate any input from anyone that is using these.

You'll get different opinions on tying down from everyone. I've done staight and criss crossed and it doesn't make a difference IMO.

With the Rennline front jack pad tie downs you are pretty much committed to crossing the straps since the mounting point/path to the D ring is eclipsed by the wheel on the same side.

To cross or not will depend on the distance between the ends as much as any thing else. The big concern is to prevent fore and aft movement of the car, side to side is only a distant second as far as concerns go. The shorter the distance between ends then the more of the tie downs effectiveness goes into preventing side to side motion and less to fore and aft motion when they are crossed. For short tie downs to be effective in fore/aft motion control, don't cross them. Conversely the longer the tie down the less of an issue this is.

I think tie downs are like car seat belts and use the same rules. The shorter the better - no crossing unless you have no other options.

Either way is fine, I also used an electric winch as belt and suspenders.

I have the Rennline fronts (and rears) on a pure track car as well. I do not cross the fronts but do cross the backs. That's based more on where my ratchets and tie down points fall. Crossing the fronts would be a real pain for me. I'm a firm believer that at least one end should be crossed. Others may have a different opinion on that front.

So even though the Rennline's point you towards the opposite wheel you have no issue just running them straight on the same side? Good to know. Crossing the fronts seems like it would be a PITA to do. Not to mention needing an even longer strap.

We run these in the crossing format. The main issue to me would be with the placement of your ratchets and if the wheel eclipses the mounts. Great mounts any way you look at it, really makes it fast and secure to put the car away.

I secure the Cup with straight tie downs and never had an issue. As noted above, I crossed mine on the street GT3 due to the way the mounts were positioned.

I have them on my spec box and I do not cross them and have no problem. My front tie downs are about 3' apart (18" each side of centre) at the front of the trailer and I have no issues.

thanks for everyone's feedback. just got the trailer out of storage and pulled the car on. Crossing the fronts would be a pain in the *** due to the way the trailex is built. seemed fine to go straight as the D-ring on the trailer is angled towards the opposite wheel.

You should be fine then. As someone else mentioned - the shorter the better.

I agrre with MACS. Have you considered going with etrack and tire basket style tie downs?
