Default Track Gear From Santa?

Hello All,

I need your expertise. Last summer, my BF began taking his 911 to the track for Drivers Education via the local Porsche club. He's hooked and already planning for next season. Though he has some basics (tire pressure gauge, camera, etc) for track days, I'm looking for more gear to supplement his "toolbox." He wants tires, but that's not in my budget. I'm thinking gear bag, gloves, tools....

Can you offer some suggestions?

Thanks very much,
The MINI-driving GF

I'd suggest, in terms of reasonable budget Christmas stuff, to consider driving shoes, gloves and check out rennline folding tow hooks, or maybe a set of race numbers.

Does he have a harnesses in the car? How about a HANS device? If budget is lower then I agree on a nice set of Alpine Star gloves, shoes, etc. If located by a race shop maybe a gift certificate would work best..

Books from Amazon!

Anything from the Speed Secrets series by Ross Bentley, Going Faster by Carl Lopez, that sort of thing!

How about a day with a coach? Less expensive than a set of tires

Martini kit, cigars and travel humidor, racing gloves and/or shoes, aluminum air tank.

OGracing is a good source for gloves and shoes. Stay away from the really cheap stuff, he will end up replacing it pretty quickly.

If he uses an iPhone, an Emprum UltiMate GPS attachment and a RAM suction cup window mount for his windshield. Harry's Lap Timer is an relatively inexpensive app that produces very good track videos, but does exceptionally well with these two add ons.

You sure have come to the right place; we are good at spending money on cars.
I would strongly second Peter's suggestion about books from Ross Bentley. This will give your friend something to do over the winter while dreaming about track season.
I'd strongly suggest this one:
Amazon Amazon
Videos are good too - what part of the country is he in?

I'm agreeing with books - or an AiM Solo. I'm sure ProCoach can help you out!

Gift certificate for a place like Stable Energies....or a "homemade" gift certificate for registration fees for a DE next season.

Wow, what a great girlfriend! Do you have a sister?

Seriously though, as generous as you are, I would shy away from buying any specific gear for your boyfriend... unless you know EXACTLY what his is looking for. Guys are VERY particular about their sports cars - especially when it comes to race gear. It woud be difficut to predict the brand, model, or color that your boyfriend has in his unflexible mind. Instead, the suggestions about gift certificates for a local race shop or online retailer; track day with or without coaching; or race books, are all excellent ideas, and will be universally appreciated.

Good luck and happy holidays!
