One thing I didn't see mentioned -- is if you drive to the track -- or at least have a car you can drive on the street -- you can test the car before you get to the track.

Currently I'm in the drive to the track mode -- but I just picked up a CTT -- so I have
the option to tow as well.

We'll see what I settle on.

As long as I stay away from Mt Tremblant I seem to be ok. That place is jinxed for me. I've broken three cars up there, and dealing with tow truck drivers and mechanics who don't speak English when you don't speak French is a barrel of laughs.

I limped my VW GTI back to Boston (~400miles) at midnight with a broken crank keyway. That sucked. A truck and trailer would've been much appreciated at that point...

When I went to the shop the next day all the mechanics put their tools down and applauded me, they couldn't believe I'd gotten the car back.

Have you thought about doing a couple of events to see if you really like it before you put the money in a trailer? Seems like you're getting ahead of yourself.

Ahhhh, I hear the voice of my instructor I will tell you some of what I told him........
For whatever reason, I do not have it in me to drive someone else's $$$$ around the track. I saw a Benz tank do a 180 in the middle of the road at full throttle (and miss a parked car) and I knew in that instant I HAD to learn to drive like that ~ my Dad has always told me that I can go through tires faster than anyone he knows I am at a time in my life where I can live it exactly the way I want to - FLAT OUT I am not going to be living in the shadows any longer. I am moving forward with my life and I won't be putting everyone else's wishes ahead of mine, like I have in the past. I may fall flat on my face, but I won't know until I try. I do know that I can use all the help I can find because we only get one shot at this life and having wonderful people in it, makes it soooo much richer.

My one suggestion would be to build up speed gradually, as you gain experience and skill. Otherwise, you'll pose an elevated risk to yourself and others (including your instructors).

And yes, it is outrageous fun.

^1+ LOL.

you will be tracking a 944 or 951? -not a 997, right?

The resale on an open aluminum is very strong, so if you got one and decided you don't like track events, you should be able to turn it over with little loss.

some like featherlight others others like trailex..... but that's a whole 'nother thread...

Hmmm... sounds like you have already lightened your car... by about 200 lbs?

I enjoy enjoy the track, the only thing I didn't like was loading up everything in your car after the last run. Usually you are hot and tired, then depending on how much kit you bring to the track you may end up changing tires prior to your drive home. Not much fun when all you want is to relax in a nice cool spot. Started with an 18-ft open top and now have moved to a 26-ft enclosed.

It is all about convenience. I also like spreading out and the tow vehicle is normally more comfortable to drive. Also I have a 951 and they rarely make it through a track event in one piece.

Terrific advice - but patience is NOT one of my virtues

My 951 makes it through track weekends without a problem. Of course it's powered by an LS1...

I have been flat towing my '76 911 to the track for a decade or so. Tow tabs on the front and a $50 tow bar. All the junk in the back of my 4Runner and 20mpg while towing.
Only downside is that I change tires at the track. But it is nice to have the street tires if it rains!
