Default ZSA Motorsport Recommends: Racing Intercoms for driver improvement

Chatterbox is fine. Not ideal. Sometimes a bit of a pain. But when you're spending hard earned money and your precious time on track with an instructor or coach or someone showing you the line, or when you want to show someone else your car or the line, nothing is more important than simple, efficient, quality communication between the driver and passenger.

ZSA Motorsport has had great success with Racing Comms ISystem1 and 502 intercom systems for driver passenger communications. These systems utilize high quality components, quality cables, and leverage a drivers' already existing in-helmet mic/ear bud kit.

Basically, many drivers already have some type of in-car radio system for communicating to their crew or spotters. In their helmet is usually found a high quality helmet kit which includes wiring, a microphone lodged in the helmet mouth area, and a cable connector to connect to the radio. With the Push of your Push-to-Talk button, you can communicate via the mouth mic to your crew or anyone on the same frequency on which you are broadcasting.

Many drivers have that in place.

THese intercom systems sit in between the helmet kit and the transmitting radio. You take your helmet kit, you connect to the driver/ passenger wires that come off the intercom. Both you and the passenger are connected to the intercom via these harness kits (look identical to the wire kit that connects you to the base radio). And with both of you connected to the intercom system, you talk openly and freely, without pushing buttons, with great clarity and freedom.

And, when the Driver pushes his Push to Talk button, anything you say then continues to transmit to the pit crew. Thus, you take out a student, you can talk openly , sharing ideas, no push to talk required, open communication, and then when you want to tell your crew that you're pitting, or need to communicate something to the car chief, you push your PTT as usual.

We've been using these units for several years. They are, for the most part, built to order, and we've fine tuned the bits and pieces needed to have a quality unit.

We stock two variants: the 502 unit is a hard wired unit which can be buried in your dash, or mounted next to your dash. Its hardwired to the car's battery source, and then driver/passenger harnesses go out to your shoulder area where the helmet kits snap in. The unit's harness has a PTT lead, and as well as connector for connecting it to your base radio. If you don't have a base radio, no worries. You can use it without a base radio, communicating freely to your passenger. IF you later add a base radio, its a simple additional harness module for connecting the intercom unit to the base radio unit.

The System 1 is a portable unit. It takes 9V batteries. Its not as polished or as compact, but its quite versatile. Our in house pro coaches use these to train with our students. You can move it from car to car in minutes. Yes, you may have some looser cables floating around given the temporary installation, but it saves money if a driver finds themselves floating between a few cars.

Both have squelch control, volumes for the driver and passenger, auxiliary output channels if you want to channel your audio into your logger or recorder, etc.

These units were originally develop for catamaran boat drivers who might literally be sitting in a different area of a boat, 20 feet away separated by a firewall or boat walls.

We stock these units. They run anywhere from 400 to 700 depending on whether you want the portable or hardwired unit and what options you desire.

These are the best intercom systems we've ever experienced. They are a perfect solution in a demanding environment. Nothing is more valuable than hearing a coach clearly so you can make the most of your time on track with someone who can make you faster, safer.

Below are some photos of the hardwired 502 unit, and then the System1 portable unit. you can readily see the difference in size. They function just about the same, but the compact is tiny.

If interested, give us a call and we'd be happy to discuss these in greater detail.
