Default Michelin slicks - heat cycles?

How many heat cycles (say 30 min) should I expect out of Michelin slicks?
Do they tend to heat cycle out before they wear out?
Are Michelin slicks with too many heat cycles (but still tread left) better than most street tires still, or just dangerous?

totally depends on how abrasive the track surface is, how the person drives, etc etc etc

given the above factors i would buy 10 heat cycles slicks for scrubs if the wear dots were still visible and if the wear was reasonably even... for the right price... and expect lap times that are 1-1.5 sec slower than fresh tires

There is a fairly sharp drop in grip after 6-7 heat cycles. In my case, usable to 16-20 heat cycles for DEW. For racing, stickers!

Forgive my ignorance on this, but when people talk about slicks as "scrubs" what do they mean?

Used tires. Usually from a source which can afford to run "stickers" (new ones) more often than we po' folk.

Or from a source who is at the pointy end of his class and needs to stay there with fresh tires.

Jared, your best bet is to attend some events where other teams or cup owners practice prior to race - you maybe able to get a lot of tires there and make useful contacts. Like it was said before, cup car section has a lot of folks you want to get friends with now.

Cool move to go into cup car from a blown 997s. Post some pictures when you get it.

Let me make a pretty firm recommendation. If you are just starting to learn the car don't screw around with old rubber. Get a good set of tires under you and go from there. Plenty of time to get cheap after you learn the car, save the scrubs after you have the experience and know when the are going to go offin a bad way. The Yokohama slicks are a nice alternative to the michelins. 9-10 heat cycles is about right.

i am with j richard on this one.
eliminate variable when learning new car.
some scrubs are great, some are junk. you will not know until you drive them.
new slicks are new slicks.

If you put one heat cycle on your Michelins and store them for at least a few days, you can get quite a few fast sessions out of them. If you run a few sessions on them when new in the same day, they will get harder/slower faster.

That could be said for all tyres.

We're really noticing the new N1 Michelins dropping off sharply after only a few HC's. Not so much with Yokohama....

New slicks scrubbed in properly are A LOT cheaper than 6-cup bumpers and fenders

Michelin tires decrease really fast. After 2-3 heat cycles, you can see a 1.5-2 secondes per lap difference.
Yokohama slicks tend to stay better for more time.

On the same day, after 4-5 x 25-30 mins runs, those Michelin slicks are done. I mean, they are gonna be still much faster than street tires but don't expect to beat lap records! On many tracks, after a full testing day, there is no more dots on those Michelin.

The best way to keep your tires performance higher with more heat cycles is to give them a mini heat cycle and let them cool for 1 full day.
