Default Smartycam and the Mac

The Smartycam saves files as AVI as the default in the H264 codec. In principle these should be easily edited with Quicktime Pro or the VLC on the Mac but in my hands this is not the case.
I just changed my camera to the MOV format and these files seem to open on Mac Quicktime just fine. Is this 'the trick?' Is the quality just as good with the MOV format versus AVI?

TIA

Yes, that is the trick (which is why it's there as an option) and yes, .mov may be slightly better quality than the .avi files.

I suggest you check out Adapter - http://www.macroplant.com/adapter/download-mac.php and HandBrake - http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
both of these are free and really useful video tools, I think you already have ConeHead (VLC Media Player). It is worth getting to grips with iMovie (truly).

Thanks. I downloaded the Adapter program which is sweet although it still wouldn't convert my AVI file.

I've used Handbrake for years to convert DVDs for use on my iPad and iPhone. Great program.

I'm going to use MOV from now on to record.

I had forgotten that you need Perian as well - Why does Adapter need Perian?
Perian allows the preview panel to display many additional media formats, allowing you to preview additional content like Flash video and AVIs.

I did install the Perian program but still couldn't convert. I do plan on using the program from now on. Much nicer than VLC.
