Default SPOILER ALERT - BEWARE: Continental Tire GS Race at Indy - Round 8 Update

FARANO AND EMPRINGHAM RECLAIM DRIVERS CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD WITH 5th PLACE FINISH AT INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

2012 BRICKYARD SPORTS CAR CHALLENGE Broadcast on SpeedTV Sunday August 5th @ 12:00PM, ET or download now on Speed2.com @ http://www.speed2.com/racing-series/...-car-challenge

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 28, 2012 (Ormond Beach, FL) – Starting from the 15th spot on the grid of a 70 car Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series field, John Farano and David Empringham finished 5th overall as the two drivers and their #83 Porsche 997 from BGB Motorsports put their heads down and continued to execute their season long strategy of avoiding trouble, finishing races without mistakes and positioning David Empringham to be able to bring home the Driver’s and Team Championships for themselves and BGB Motorsports.

The inaugural race for the Rolex Sports Car Series’ running of the Brickyard Sports Car Challenge featured the dramas of heavy, race stopping rains, exploding RVs, strategy battles up and down pit road, crashes on track and a bit of uncertainty as it was anyone’s luck to be in the fight at the end.

Just after the race’s 1 hour mark John Farano had completed his stint and David Empringham was moving up through the field. As skies gave way to rain, Empringham and the #83 Porsche found themselves in 1st place following their 2nd pit stop at the race’s half way mark as 75 minutes remained. Conditions however were treacherous and a stop again to pit road for Continental rain tires was mandatory, and the driver would have to yield the lead of the race.

Cycling back through the order before and after the race was paused for dangerous amounts of standing water a final stop again to pit road for dry Continental Tires left “Emp” with only 15 minutes left to get going. During the closing laps of the event Empringham showed just why it is that he has won more than half of the championships he has fully contested, gobbling up valuable points as the clock ran down and the yellow caution flag came out for the final time.

The team’s 2nd Porsche entry, #38 Porsche 997 of John Tecce and J-F Dumoulin had to be withdrawn Friday morning when a brand new engine with less than 30 minutes life let go on Dumoulin during his 2nd and only flying laps of practice at Indy early Friday. The brief 1-day schedule prohibited any hope of a motor swap by race time, thus disappointing much of the team, as the car was entered with the hopes of having a 2nd strong bullet in the gun to assist the #83 Porsche and its efforts. The #38 Porsche originally entered with support from Grandma’s Original Recipes had shown signs of speed earlier in the month during testing and felt very good with an old and tired engine so a new sealed stock engine was purchased to put every effort forward in the Porsche fight to try and position the 2-time Rolex 24 winning Porsche pilot Dumoulin to run alongside Emp at the end; it just wasn’t meant to be.

While the race may have ended under caution in 5th place for the team and drivers, the season-long race continues to look promising as the direct championship contenders had their own dramas, producing a much needed points cushioning for the #83 Porsche sponsored by Tower Events. The unofficial points standings following the 8th round of the championship show Farano and Empringham returning to 1st place in the Driver’s Championship, 6 points ahead of 2nd place Porsche drivers Plumb and Longhi; the Team Championship has tightened to a 9 point gap from 1st through 3rd place as Rum Bum Racing still leads BGB Motorsports by 2 points with the Indianapolis race winning Chevrolet Camaro moving solidly into 3rd place with 211 points, 7 points behind BGB. In the Manufacturer’s Championship, the lead for Porsche Cars North America stretches to 14 points over BMW, 23 points over Chevrolet and 25 points over Ford as Aston Martin, Subaru, Nissan and Audi round out the top 8.

The final 2 rounds of the season take teams across country to Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California on September 7 – 8, 2012 before returning back across country to Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut on September 27 – 28, 2012 where someone will be crowned champion.

Fans of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series may view this past weekend’s race on Speed TV on Sunday August 5th at 12:00pm, ET. Eligible cable customers anxious to view it now can download it from the link above.

John

After the rain mess a 5th is not bad considering the shuffling that took plaace. Sorry to hear you were not able to run the #38, the tight schedule made any repairs post practice impossible.

It was nice to speak with you, see you at Laguna.

Well done. The way Emp was mowing through the field after he took off the rain tires and got on some fresh slicks was great to watch from the infield. He was passing 2 and 3 cars at a time. If he had been able to run green all the way to the end of the race instead of getting hit with that final caution I am pretty confident this would have been yet another podium finish for them. And it didn't hurt that Plumb's similar run through the field involved a little rubbing that cost him some spots instead of moving him forward. But that's racing and I'll take it how I can get it. Go BGB. Can't wait to watch the race at Laguna.
