Default Defective Wheel Studs

I had converted my 996 GT3 to race studs in 2010. At Watkins Glen a week ago, I came in from a session and we found that two rear studs had broken off.

Yesterday, at another Watkins Glen event, a driver in a 997 Carrera S came in also with two rear studs broken off.

Check your wheel studs after every session......

I just did this last week on my race car. Who was the manufacturer?

I am heading to VIR this weekend and was planning to take the original bolts anyway, just in case something happened.

Some wheels studs are made better than others, the silver ones seem to break a lot, while the black bullet nose style seem to last and last. The black ones do cost more, go figure right.

Typically the black ones are stronger and seem to have less issues.

My point was, either black or silver, we should inspect these after each session, even if it means just being sure all 20 are still there. I typically would only torque my wheels, every AM..

I consider this a wear item and try to change them every season.

I have broken a few of the black Apex bullnose studs as well. I have since turned down all of my air guns and no longer tighten them up all the way with the gun. Then torque them by hand. They are a b*itch to drill out!

I always have torqued mine by hand, never had an issue. I have these on half a dozen cars I work on and maintain.

I've had both black and silver ones break. I've also always torqued by hand, although I've removed with my gun.
Once, one broken one buggered the wheel carrier threads. I switched back to bolts, and haven't had a problem with them.
