Default Best race radio setup, range, clarity, etc?

Single pit person, one in car, don't want to have to worry about range and quality. Where do I start?

Gary,

Motorola SP90 racing kits are available used on eBay and have outstanding reception and clarity.

Sorry, guys. I think they're SP 50's. Too lazy to go to the garage and check. Anyway, these are commercial-grade two way radios.

SP50 sounds right Mark, i'm going to see what the radio vendor (Motorola) for the fleet I manage says, I was just PM'd that they should be able to be persuaded to hook me up as I have a pretty extensive radio setup...

I got mine from Sampson racing radios. They got me a setup which works great. Non Motorola (but the company is owned by Motorola). Great deals there.

Clubracingradios.com is another alternative. Even their economy model will give you coverage at Sebring with the proper antenna. Not sure about the Glen though.

Gary I bought from Racing Radios in Atlanta who gave me good service and use CP200 4W for the crew and a PM400 25W in the car. I tried a 4W in the car but find that at tracks like the Glen and VIR the 25 W makes a difference.

There are hand-held and there are in-car models. The in-car models have superior range. At most larger tracks the hand-held units go out of range when the car is at the farthest point from the spotter or at the bottom of a hill. Get one the installs in the car and this should not be a problem. The downside to that unit would be sharing.
Let us know what you get and how it works.

Racing Radios Georgia, they handle a lot of the pro stuff as well as Porsche's school at Barber.

I have used there harnesses for years and just bought several new radios, headsets along with additional harness.

Excellent service and quality.

Ask for Charles Allen.

I love the sp-50's we have. Clarity has been great, with an external antenna. No dead spots at Nelson's, gingerman or Putnam, but haven't tried any of the longer tracks. We just got a used nascar car harness from ebay, works great.
