Yeah but a Ford Excursion is basically an enclosed F250. Not the same as a mid size Touareg. Looks like I'll pass on my friends trailer and pick up an aluminum open trailer instead.
Or if the sales guy doesn't call me today on the Touareg I'll look into a Crew Cab Duramax 2500 and get my friends trailer...

I get about 8 towing my 24ft enclose behind my 8.0L V10 dodge. I used to get about 10 towing an open trailer. If you are towing under 10,000lbs and don't need do much with the vehicle other than towing/hauling then 3/4 ton or 1 ton gasser is not a bad deal. Most will have enough power to moving the load, enough chassis to control it and will be much cheaper buy in that a diesel. I bought my 99 dodge back in 2002 and wanted a diesel. But even then at 6k used price difference the gas truck was a good buy. I did not then they torque of the diesel (heck back then the diesel had less hp and similar torque) and 6k buys alot of gas. I have put something like 30k on the truck since I got it and 90% of those miles have been towing.

I have an 06 V10 TDI. It tows pretty well, but I am towing a 20ft enclosed. I wouldn't go any larger than that. Haven't had any issues with the tail wagging the dog, but balancing the load is critical to avoid this. My trailer and car total approx. 6k pounds.

I had 2 touaregs and a Cayenne. I have always towed a 20' enclosed trailer...first a steel trailer and now a V-nosed ATC. I would not even think about anything longer than 20'. I am pretty close to max weight and second the tail will be completely wagging the dog with any cross winds. The engine and the brakes are great but the short WB creates a problem above 65 with any kind of wind. Passing semis is kinda scary as well.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm going to give the dealer a realistic (low for them I'm sure) offer on the Touareg tomorrow, if they take it I'll get an open trailer.
If not I'll look into a crew cab 2500...
