Could anybody comment on overall longevity of M96 motors on those cars?
How long do they last, in average? Are all you guys still on a first motor or had to replace already? If yes, what was the issue?

My newest motor is a 3.4 case, cams, and heads with 3.6 crank and rods. It dyno'd at 304 on a Dyno Dynamics but has yet to see a Dynojet where I expect it to be around 320. Oh and TQ was 285 with that 304 rwhp ....

My car was a salvage title '99 with Porsche reman motor with 30k miles on it when I got it.
It had been in a minor accident but the insurance co wrote it off.
Year one was getting it set up and doing DEs. For the last two the car has been raced (maybe 6-8 events p.a.) and driven hard including several 2-4 hr enduros in ambient temps ranging from 35-105F ambient.
FYI we use Motul 300v oil and change frequently and cut open the oil filter for analysis. Touch wood- so far so good.

Caveat -- I don't track 996's.
My mechanic buddy has rebuilt several M96 engines including a couple 3.4 and a few 3.6's.
I occasionally get my hands dirty and help a little.
Both 3.4 and 3.6's suffer from IMS issues.
Both suffer from cracked cylinder heads.
Both suffer from cracked cylinder liners -- but the internet scuttlebutt is that the 99's are more prone to this. I have personally seen one of each (3.4 & 3.6). (I was surprised on the '03 3.6)
From an oiling stand point the #6 rod bearing is what I hear is the weak link -- or at least where any oil starvation shows up.
The X51 sump is supposed to help as is an LNE deep sump kit.
Accusump might help -- but I lost a 944 engine to a rod bearing failure with one on -- so I'm not convinced.
If possible (Spec rules) I might consider adding an external oil cooler if I could figure where to put one.

M96 suffers from a lot of stuff indeed, but I was more interested to hear 'real' stats from owners who race their M96 based cars. So far it does not seem to be as bad as rumor mill has it.
