Default Audio recording with SmartyCam and Chatterbox

Was watching some laps from the SmartyCam, and it dawned on me that I would like to capture audio from the Chatterbox for the SmartyCam movies. I'd like it mostly to check myself on how well I am communicating with students.
Any thoughts on whether it is possible to add the Chatterbox feed to the audio that the SmartyCam is already capturing?
Thanks

OK, now I'm REALLY interested in recording the audio from a Chatterbox communicator on an in car camera (I have a SmartyCam).
Why?
I think that the value of a coach or instructor's real time commentary on the video would be even more effective than my memory of the run.
Surely there must be a way to wire this up, but I don't know what it is.
SmartyCam and some other cameras allow an external microphone feed, but how would I pull a mic feed off of the Chatterbox?

Rick

I have a SC power cable that accepts an external microphone. It has a mini jack and most likely you can adapt something to plug into your chatterbox. If you'd rather, I also have a power cable that has an external mike built in and you could -place it near your chatterbox mouthpiece. I'll donate one to the cause if you want to try one.

Normally, I would say that this is what you want.

http://www.smartycam.com/download/co...Ext_SC_eng.pdf

Unfortunately, there is no "audio out" feature to use this to record audio from the HJC-50 to the SC.

You need to purchase this: http://www.smartycam.com/download/co...rtyCam_eng.pdf from Jerry or I and stick it in your helmet.

Sorry, it's Chatterbox's issue...

Why? The chatterbox has two jacks. Seems to me all you need to do is take an old student headset, cut off the headset and wire it to a jack for the mic. Everybody has one of those. You may need a pot to step it down but it should work.

I'm just a simple liberal arts major (and worse, a consultant), so I need this explained to me in short words.
I'm looking to record the signal from both driver and passenger if that helps.

I think you could do a 2 into 1 jack (Radio Shack) and attach a microphone to both of the Chatterbox mouthpieces, if you can't get into the audio signal of the Chatterbox. Are you moving the video camera to the student's car?

Hi Jerry
No, this would just be in my car. It might be useful to have a portable system but that's not my intent. A student might want it, though.
If I were a pro coach (yeah, right) I might like my clients to have the video and commentary recorder for their later study.

Rick, the "external microphone" for the SmartyCam has a 24" lead - perhaps you can just put a little piece of velcro on it it and stick it inside either you, or your coach's helmet?

It won't really record the whole conversation, but something is better than nothing.

Hi Van
I may well have to do that; recording the coach is really what I would be looking for. My comments would be more along the 'huh?" lines.
Or, 'wow - that really works!!' as I have done a few times with Scott Leader and Dave Scott in the right seat (not at the same time).

I just checked my chatterbox and as I thought, it's full duplex (i.e both mics are played in both headsets), so you should be able to pigtail off the speakers of one of them and run that to the microphone in on the smartycam.

Are you going to be at VIR Rick? if you can pick up the external mic cable we could play with it.

That sounds like what I was hoping for. Care to design this for me?
I won't be at VIR; although I enjoyed my several trips there, the tow is just too time consuming and spendy these days, but thanks for the idea.

Yeah, it's a haul for me too but well worth it. I don't have a smartycam but I'll see what I can do. I wish my Contour had an external mic input but I can try it with a regular video camera.

How about the NJMP race? I think there is a DE there as well.

Thanks!
Not very helpful, am I? I do use NJMP as a season extender (that is, later in the year than when I would go to Watkins Glen or Tremblant, my 2 'home' tracks). So no on that one, too.
Care to come up our way?

Did some searching but could not find an off the shelf splitter and adapter the would work given what Scott has discovered so far.

The following links may help with the custom fab:
