Default SmartyCam/AiM/Traqmate - best option???

I'm intersted in adding some video/data acquisition capabilities as my winter project. My goals are as follows:

1) Video with overlay for track position, gas, brake, RPM, speed, lap time
2) In car lap time display
3) Easy of installation
4) Low cost (or at least as low as possible)

Ability to add other data is NOT very important. Any thoughts, recommendations, pointers etc would be greatly appreciated.

Regards and happy new year to all!!!

There is a good article at http://www.trailbrake.net/2/post/201...quisition.html that deals with what to look for in systems. Neel at Apex is a great guy and does lots of sytems.

One important thing to remember is the software if you want to get into the data. I find the Traqmate software tougher to use than the AiM software. Other people find it opposite.

A good person to talk with about data overlayed on video is Peter Krause (Lolaman). He's done lots of systems like that and sells all the major ones.

i would also consider as a factor 'easy to mount' question - Solo is small and fits very nicely on a dash.
in a case of a stripped race car it is not such big of the deal but for car with full interior Solo unit is a God sent thing, it looks just like one more stock gauge and not like something you`ve attached to $80K car with a nailgun.

I'll post a few examples and screen grabs of each shortly. #1 can be done with just about all the equipment, just need to decide if the processing (combining of the data with the video as an overlay) happens real-time (on-track) or afterwards (in the pits or at home). #2 is easily done via three different dash displays from AiM, two from Traqmate, one from Racelogic. #3 is easy. they're all easy! #4 is relative...

I'm sure Peter has lots of screen grabs to share, but he put some together at http://www.trailbrake.net/2/post/201...e-to-edit.html

Thanks to all for the input. I'm leaning towards the SmartyCam/SoloDL combo.

http://t.co/M2d1b7JV

This is the "kit list" I've been sending folks who've inquired about that combo:

1 Solo DL $699
Includes:
AC charger
cigarette lighter 12V cord
USB cable for configuration, charging and download
Solo DL to CAN/RS-232 connection for Bosch or Siemens ECU CAN data (996 GT3 and newer)
software CD (includes documentation)
printed Quick Start manual

1 SmartyCam $999
Includes:
AC charger
USB cable for configuration, charging (recommend downloading from the microSD card)
4M cable to connect via AiM CAN to Solo DL
Software CD (includes documentation)
External GPS antenna (not used, GPS taken from the Solo DL)
Wide lens spec (only and best option in NA)
4GB class 4 microSD card and SDHC adapter
Free 16GB class 4 microSD card upgrade.
Accessories
Solo DL RAM Suction Cup mount with mounting plate attached $49
Freight and insurance $35

Total: $1782 (plus NC or VA tax, if those are the billing or ship to addresses)

I update the firmware on the SmartyCam to the latest spec (.10), load all North American tracks into the Solo DL, configure the Solo DL in Race Studio for the application, charge the batteries on both Solo DL and SmartyCam and test function. Plus one hour of complementary phone/internet support to get it up and running. Should be plug 'n play!

Marc, FWIW, I just purchased a complete (albeit different) kit from Peter.

I highly recommend that you consider him as a "sole source" for all of this stuff - he's that good and that easy to do biz with.

Quick Reply: SmartyCam/AiM/Traqmate - best option???
