Ring and Pinion Gear wear
Calling all the experts. Please see the x-post below.
https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...-wear-ugh.html Thanks for looking. I fear my pocketbook getting lighter soon... :crying: Best, Matt |
Hard to tell in a photo, but that looks worn to me. Can you feel the wear with a finger nail?

Pinion depth problem?

I guess my question is, how bad is this really? Had I not had an oil leak, the engine and transmission would still be in the car. Ignorance is bliss. Now that I know what's the actual condition, I guess my questions are: 1. Can I just button it all back up as is? 2. What's the practical risk of doing so? Need to assess in terms of what a R&P replacement would cost. Also, I am especially curious as to what led to this in the first place and how to avoid it going forward. Best, Matt |
Personally - stick a fork in it - it's done.
How long would it last? Who knows. I've seen cars that howl go on for a couple of years. I drove a 901 for over a year with it howling until it was real bad. But by real bad, it chucked itself. Problem is, there is no way to know the failure mode. It could just wear and eat up horsepower (like 50+), it could chunk and take out other parts, or worse case it could lock up in the middle of the Esses at Watkins Glen. |
You need a new ring and pinion, don't reinstall it. Whoever you have rebuild the gearbox, make sure they have the FACTORY pinion tools to properly set the depth and other measurements, otherwise you'll be revisiting this issue again. The specifications are engraved on the side of the ring gear and they are all different, so if you buy a used set, ensure you are getting a set and not a ring gear from one set and a pinion gear from another.

Thanks guys for the great advice.
Matt, I'll call you on Monday for thoughts on next steps re. the LSD, plus what's involved time and $$ wise for the R&P replacement. I assume this involves opening up the transmission, in which case my head and pocketbook are together exploding at the upgrade possibilities "while we're in there". Best, Matt |
Hum I see in your near future........ 10k less in your bank account!!

Contact Joel Reiser at 585-624-3899 he can likely assist you at a reasonable cost.

There is a G50 box w/ LSD, some steel synchros and a few shortened gears for sale over on the Pxxxxx site for 8K. Probably less than what you will spend to go through your box and do it right. Just found it in the Rennlist for sale section as well.

Joel would be an excellent choice.
I had mine done at GBox (Stan was terrific); while you're in there gives you the opportunity to do new ratios. Stan is very knowledgeable on that and I love mine. Good luck with that pocketbook. Mine got real light last year. |
