Might be one or two new ones in here. I don't have time to delete the duplicates.

West Coast Racing, formally The Pantera Club. Owned and operated by Jim Saxton, SMHS class of 64' IIRC and current SM resident. Good guy....

FWIW, you need to be careful which organization(s) you chose to run with. The competence of the drivers around you should be of primary importance and not just run time or convenience. If you put your GT3 on the track with some $5k claimers who don't give a crap if they slide out into or cut off your nose then you're asking for it. Just ask Mooty....

Another thing, if you want to learn how to DE then by all means go run with anyone of the DE type operations you listed above. If you want to learn how to race then go with a racing organization. DE instruction is different than racing instruction and IMHO can be detremental to your racing learning curve. With DE instruction the intent is to keep you safe.
Of course if you already know everything like about half the DE students I encounter, then please feel free to disregard my comments....

POC racing and time trials (intermediate step between DE and racing) are at Willow Springs this coming weekend Dec 3-4. You should drive up and soak up all of the experince you can. I'll be working on my race car and trailer at home on Friday. PM me if you want to stop by....

where are you located in CA?
NCRC does only 2-3 days in Socal, primarily BW.
trackmaster almost never do Socal
speedventure does 5-6 days up in norcal and often in conjuction with another club
HOD is norcal based, and not often socal.
if you are anywhere near SD or LS, there is no reason not to run with POC. they do maybe 10 weekends a year? and lots of driving time per day, plenty to wear out your car ;-)
CFRA is a private club invitation only, primarily nor cal.
TEAM usually does only thunderhill less than 5 events a year IIRC
judy and carl at driving concept are exceptional and socal based
bmwcca also a great group.

That was going to be my next question. Are there any clubs to avoid?

If you want to learn how to race then go with a racing organization.
I'm not sure I want to get into racing at the moment. But I definitely am interesting in going through at least something like the POC progression so I can race when I am ready.

My weekend is booked, but I'm definitely interested in coming by friday. I'll PM you.

I am in socal, but I don't mind driving up and down the state. I may be storing my car in Daly City this year anyway to have it more central to all the tracks in CA.

^ daly city, pretty central
i am in woodside.

PCA GGR (golden gate region has 3 weekends, 6 days) they are pretty good. but as with all PCA regions, you need to pay your dues and work up the run groups.

lotus club is very laid back, but no coaching.

BMWCCA in norcal is run by some REALLY good ppl, they do allow porsches. many of the instructors there track GT3's.

i would really avoid open track group.
speed venture is very good once you get to the top run groups. but most of aaron's events are so cal.

POC is very good for the structure and the instruction you get. The only downside is that everyone has to advance at the same pace and it's a long time before they let you drive at Big Willow, which is Southern California's best track (in this driver's opinion). I don't know if Mooty is advising you to avoid Open Track Racing specifically or groups that simply run open track time in general. But I'm an instructor for Open Track Racing, and I think they run a very safe event with the kind of track time POC will never be able to offer. (I'm also a POC instructor, but haven't been active with them in a while.)

If you're looking to learn Big Willow and can get away from work on a Wednesday, come out on January 19th and I'd be happy to show you the line I teach and help you get quicker at (pretty much) the fastest road course in the country.

^ jack, thanks for pointing out my not so clear post.
i dont mean to avoid Open Track Racing. i meant to say to avoid some smaller, chaotically run "open track" events where organizers simply collect money and send cars out on track. no real instructors and you see a lot of "yahooooo" on track. they are very cheap events but a lot of things can go wrong very quickly.

hopefully this post clarify things up a bit.

Anyone care to share their experiences in the race group in AROSC?
