Default Transmission Repair! What's the Latest?

OK, I've raced my 2000 Boxster S trans since 2004. All original except a light weight flywheel and Guards Transmission LSD. It is mated to a 3.6L '05 996 motor. We are pulling the box out and replacing the pressure plate and clutch. While it's out, I'm looking for ideas and info regarding any options for changing gear sets or Ring and Pinion while its out. The car is a dedicated race car. Not street Legal.

Has anyone made these changes? Who did they buy from? Was it noticeable on track?

Any input or ideas would be welcomed.

I'm in Tampa, Florida. SoCal would be nice as there are plenty of options then.

Can't help with gearing though I have the same question about my 5 speed but I'm curious how the diff has held up. Mine just got a new Guards LSD. Any issues with the clutches?

Rick,
Do you have any experience with the R&P from CMS? I'd heard that there had been some issues with the parts grinding each other apart. Now I don't know if that statement was about the CMS parts or another manufacturer.

CMS also carries the Albins short gears for that box. They have a short 3-6 gears.
I just bought a box with them installed and looking forward to giving them a shot next season.

Matt at Guard has the 8:33 R&P that works out to something like a 4:11 ratio. My shop installed 2 in race applications earlier this year with no issues to date. The 8:32 R&P are the ones prone to wearing out....

This is more than likely due to the lack of a hunting gear. Meaning 8 divides into 32 evenly, the same teeth run with each other and wear isnt spread out over more teeth.

LOL -- no, just a cesspool of information

Seriously though, during gbx design, ring and pinion ratio selection does revolve somewhat around this sort of stuff.

Hello John,

While I always appreciate the endorsements, our R/P sets are not for the G96 and G86 street boxes like in your 996 Carrera or the early Boxster S. Our sets are for the Cup Car and GT3s. Can't jump platforms with the parts.

Or maybe you're thinking of the G87 version that we're currently working on. I know that some of you may have seen mention of it in the ads in the magazines. There's been a delay on getting some tooling made and we don't have those until after the first of the year sometime, and I've pulled the ads so as not to create any more dissatisfied people who want one yesterday. It will be a 4.125 ratio like our GT3 version and will fit any G87 6spd Cayman or Boxster gearbox 2005 or newer. But not quite yet.

The only R/P set that I know of for the G86.20 Boxster 6spd is the 4.00 Albins set that CMS sells. 2 or 3 years ago I know that they had some teething issues (pun intended) when they first purchased the machine and were learning to cut ring and pinion sets. However, I have been told that that is behind them now and what's currently being produced is a much more refined piece with a better lifespan.
