Default Interesting Hoosier problem

Last week I took my 997TT to NHMS with a set of 19" Hoosier R6 as my Spec Box is undergoing repairs.

The car is stock and I'm embarrassed to say still has the alignment from the factory from 3 years ago. Needless to say I corded the right front after about 10 sessions (track is CCW). Ouuucccchhhhh.

The interesting thing that happened is on the right rear wheel where there is some sort of wire that is protruding between the rim and tire. I've sent the pic to Damon at TR who feels it's likely a bead or a "wild cord." Pretty interesting huh?

You may want to reach out to Hoosier as well. Something similar happened to some Hoosier slicks I had - they were very quick to replace it!

Love Hoosier!! Their service is second to none!

That happened to Mike Bavaro at Thunderbolt. That same looking wire was sticking out of the sidewall. I thought that it might have been some sort of tie wire because it looks too fat to be part of the bead wiring from what I have seen. I'd be interested to know what you find out. I also have a few dead Hoosiers around here. Maybe it's time to take a sawzall to one.

Yep. Had that happen numerous times. Whipped the crap out of the fenders on a couple cars. For that and couple more reasons we moved to Yokos.

Happened to me too, they were near end of life anyways.
Odd problem though... and makes a very unpleasant sound on the fender.
I use Michelin now.

Sure you didn't select the optional curb feelers?

Has there been any reason stated for these seemingly repeated symptoms?

Wow, I'm amazed that this has happened with others.
I was informed that Hoosier would reimburse based on remaining expected tire life which I don't think is very much especially after going through the trouble and expense of returning the tire. Frankly, I wouldn't run the Hoosiers again on this car in it's stock trim.

I'll have to get the car unloaded and have a close look at the fender. It didn't look like it got hit but I'll need to clean it up and have a better look.

In addition to the curb feeler look, I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Ben Hur chariot thing.

Just curious, what tire pressure where you running cold ? Hot ? And how much does your 997TT weigh ? I am guessing it's stock and pretty heavy ?

I was running about 32-34/38-40 hot and about 8 pounds less cold with subsequent bleeding to the hot temps.
The car is totally stock and I believe is about 3500 lbs.

I would recommend a little higher tire pressure, with that weight.
You are in a compromising position because at your current alignment it's not optimum for the Hoosiers (they like 3+neg camber) so tire temps across the tire will be off.

Here is a Hoosier tire doc with "their" recommendations, it's a great place to start.

Yes, if your car is particularly heavy. Hoosiers like to be run hard, but the problem is that at the pressure that they run best, you only have another pound or so increase before they get greasy, so most guys seem run them well below the optimum because of that.

On my 2700 lb RSA they worked best around 38 lbs hot.
