Default Porsche Boxster S 6 s/p transaxle questions

Think this is the best place to post this question. I’m working on a mid-engine project and using a Porsche Boxster S 6 s/p transaxle. I have a questions that I hope this group can assist on.

The shift linkage on the side of the transaxle has a relatively large bent bar and counter weights at each end. It is my assumption that the purpose of this bar with counter weights is to assist with smooth shifts. For strictly a track application, does is apparatus serve a real function? It is in the way of some custom brackets but can build around it if really necessary but would be very convenient if I could just remove the lower counter weight.

The attached pic shows the linkage in question.

TIA

I would be careful with this piece of kit. In my experience, people upgrading Boxsters/Caymen switch to trannies dfrom other cars, including the GT3 box inverted with extra oil pickups to keep everything lubricated. As this is non trivial work, they must have good reason to shun the standard box

Thanks for the heads up, this is going into a very light (under 1,700 lbs) with a relatively low power engine mated to it. This will be circuit racing only so no crazy off-road jumps. Therefore, do not think I will be pushing any engineering tolerances. Besides, I really like the stock gear ratios, they fit nicely for my application.

you probably won't find anybody with direct experience in removing the counter weights because there is no need. There aren't a lot of people using the G86/20 in things other than Boxsters. The only ones I know of is Ultima. They invert the 996 version and use it in mid-engine application for corrected CV angle in their kit-cars with really low ride heights.

Not that it's relevant, but what engine and suspension are you using. I see markings on the bellhousing for what I'm assuming are areas that need to be notched and that axle looks to be from some kind of Japanese import...

Blue markings is machinist blue dye. Good eye on the half shaft. It is going into an early ‘70s Lotus Europa with Mazda Miata spindles and uprights. Custom control arms I’m building. The goal is club level endurance racing. I’ve been on the podium 3 times at the 25 hours of Thunderhill driving a Miata as well as other shorter races and convinced that, at least at the club level, a light, good handling, reliable car with relatively speaking good fuel mileage will beat heavier and high powered cars.
