Izod IndyCar Series driver and fan favorite Danica Patrick is the world's third-highest-paid female athlete, according to an earnings estimate by Forbes.com.

Patrick's annual income is estimated at $12 million, trailing only tennis players Maria Sharapova ($25 million) and Caroline Wozniacki ($12.5 million).

Tennis players dominate the list, grabbing seven of the top 10 spots.

Forbes's estimates are for the 12 months ending on July 1 and include the athletes' salaries, prize money, appearance fees and endorsements.

"..salaries, prize money, appearance fees and endorsements"

I am going to go out on a limb and guess that prize money makes up the smallest portion of that $12 million.

I was thinking the same thing. If Landjet and a couple others get a hold of this thread, I'm calling for a 5-7 page total....

The IP could have smoked them out by retitling per:
"Danika Patrick- 3rd highest paid woman in sports- and worth every damn dollar."

Your worth what ever you can trick them into paying you, Danica well done.

I don't believe Danica is anything special as a race car driver, but marketing is where it's at in big league racing.

It's not like there aren't similar examples of male drivers who earn more than their racing results suggest <umm... Dale Jr?>, but it is still fascinating how it works. Danica certainly has good business acumen.

She is definitely a good driver who has earned her ride in Indy Car, but I do think there are better female drivers making a lot less $$.

Well, life is rarely fair!

Can you say "Go Daddy. Com?" During telecast of Indy 500, there were a whole series of commercials during the telecast featuring her. She is pretty much the face of the Indy 500. Also being American and having a name like Danica Patrick doesn't hurt either. I believe she will be making big mistake if she leaves the Indy series and goes full time into NASCAR. The field is much bigger, and more competitive cars and drivers. There are probably only 6-7 Indy cars that have real chance of winning any given week, and in NASCAR there are at least three times more cars that can win any given week. She will just be another driver in NASCAR, but in Indy Series she is one of the better driver's with a race car that at least has a chance of being one of the front runners.

The Nationwide series is a mess right now. All the Cup guys come in and win every week. Nationwide has no identity of it's own....used to be a series for up and comers, but they can't get people to come to races unless they have cup drivers. (The should make them start in the back). Catch 22. Anyhow, a full time run in Nationwide would generate some buzz.
