Default E Boxster, WTF is Porsche doing?

I just got an email from Porsche News about them seriously building an all electric Boxster. I wonder what they are thinking? Is this going to become a necessity for all sports car builders? It may be interesting from a power aspect, but for me one of the main attractions of driving a Porsche is having that awesomely unique sounding motor behind me, pushing away. I kind of liked Corvairs for that same reason. I don't see the attraction of driving a Porsche that sounds like an indoor go kart.

I agree in general Larry, but will await more details. A good friend works on the mini E project, and I can tell you there is a market!

Better question... what PCA CR class?

You need to read the article in the latest Autoweek. The car has an electronic "audio" system that supposedly replicates the gas motor's exhaust note quite well. Its trying to compete with the Tesla. Its an interesting alternative to someone that lives in-town, and wants an enviro-friendly, but still cool, way to get around.

IMHO, the electro technology is finally beginning to bud. I'm guessing the best is yet to come.

Government cheese, most likely. Also, good for PR reasons.
No one will buy it, of course, except of selected few in Hollywood.

I agree that the techonolgy will develop rapidly, and I am sure that there is a market for these, but I guess that I am wondering what will make this "a Porsche" and truely differentiate itself from other maker's "E" cars?

Push for electric vehicles was binded to plans to build a grid of nuclear power stations all around as current grid cannot support it. After Japan it all came to hault and honestly with current battery technology this joke is even worse than with 'eco-friendly' light bulbs. It will result in same outcome - more jobs for Asia markets and less cash left in our pockets here.

And i really want to see how all those 'plans' will transform if we will in fact default and dollar will drop down like a brick.

Green Racing is BIG business, and remember e motors produce instant torque! Its where most are heading. Larry the silence of e motors is cured by a wave file that with an external speaker...it makes everyone feel good when they hear the sound.

keep in mind that strict laws are coming to the UK and Europe requiring "fleet average" fuel efficiency. we'll be seeing more and more nonsense coming from every manufacturer to balance the high performance sports cars with fuel efficient models.

But you only need to sell one car with infinite mileage to make the fleet mileage go up. Then they will have to rewrite the laws.

And imagine the pit stops. 12 seconds for changing tires and 4 hours to recharge the batteries. Unless you replace the whole pack precharged.

Tesla is a Lotus Elise platform with an electric drivetrain. Lotus Elise uses a Toyota engine. So neither Tesla nor Lotus had any engine-image to protect. I would have expected VW to roll this out as a VW or even an Audi.

What will make this a Porsche is what makes all models Porsche.
It will be the most kick-*** car in its class, and will be fun to drive.
They're staying ahead of the curve, pushing innovation.
We all freaked when they were developing an SUV, now it's their best selling car.

There are people still freaking out about going to a liquid cooled engine!
