My wife and I just got back from 2 three day DE events sponsored by NER/NCR/UCR at Calabogie and LCMT. The events and weather were wonderful although I got a tank of bad gas and a MAF failure both of which I fixed with minimal loss of track time.

I decided to step away from the 'spec' tire for my SPBOX as I simply wanted to go faster! So, I went from running R888 to Hoosier R6.
To say I loved the Hoosiers would be an understatement. I found them to be very predictable with more precise feedback than my R888s. I even liked them in light rain.

I was able to shave 4-5 secs off at LCMT on the Hoosiers (1:57s) and 3 secs off at Calabogie (2:27). I love the grip on the R6s and the way they communicate to me.

The price is about 15% more than I was paying for 888s and frankly the heat cycles aren't that far off from each other as this season I've found the 888s to be fading faster than last year.

Has anyone else run these tires on their SPBOX? I went from 255 square r888 to 245/40/17 square on the R6.
I'm wondering if I should stick with the Hoosiers or try the BFG R1, Dunlop, Kumho 710, or the elusive Eagle RS.



BTW, the low point of the event was learning how to change a fuel filter on the 986 on a dirt surface. I think the Porsche engineers must have decided that the fuel filter should never be replaced on the 986 given that it is located at the car's center of gravity behind hydraulic and cooling lines.

The other tires you mention are a step down from the Hoosier. I found the BFG R1 to be a little "numb" and didn't realy care for them. The Kumho 710 feel much different than the Hoosiers and don't give a good indication of the limit. Kumho Victoracers are reasonable, but much slower than Hoosiers. They do last a long time though and give good feedback "feel."

Welcome of the drug club. You'll always feel let down with any other tire until you go to real slicks.

If the R6's blow your mind do your self a favor and dabble in Hoosier's Non-DOT racing slick !!! You'll see stars and your friends won't be able to see you cause you'll be in the spirit world.

On the boxster platform I moved from r6's to Hoosier slicks and found 2.5 seconds at Sebring, to a new personal best of 2:22.

I don't and have never run a square set up but I'm sure the slicks will make you giggle with delight. Now, as you experienced a small step in price with the R6's you will also experience a touch of price creep here as well. I would say S1,700 per set.

Regarding heat cycles, most of my competitors run 911's and do not get the cycles I have been able to get with the slicks. In fact, my 2:22 came on slicks with 15 heat cycles on them. I've only taken a tire down to the cords once at VIR (left front) but it again had 12 cycles on it.

I agree with slicks.. ONE YOU GO UNCUT YOU WILL NEVER GO BACK.

I TRIED SLICKS LAST AUGUST FOR THE FIRST TIME AND A MONTH LATER I HAD 10 SETS IN MY GARAGE... NOW I HAVE 2 SETS LEFT AND WONDERING WHERE I CAN SCORE MY NEXT FIX.

Try the new compound R1's. They are much more forgiving at the limit than than originals. I know they come in 245\40-17 because that's what I run up front.

start searching now for racers who sell used up sets of R6 tires. somebody posted just today about 245/295 sets in R18. brand new R6 sets for each other event may bankrupt one quite fast...

I've heard that the 'new' R1 was pretty good. Tire Rack has them for about the same price as the R6.

Be careful ordering from tire rack. Be VERY clear that you are only interested in new compound R1's.

This is great news......While I loved the grip of the R1's....the "light switch" nature of their grip was NOT FUN.....in fact the only times I have EVER spun my racer (avatar) were with R1's... I like to think I'm a better driver now....

The R6's are WORLDS better in terms of their communication.....I also found Toyo RA1's do be much better letting you know whats going on..maybe even better than the hoosiers, but they are much slower too.....its really a let down coming from R6's... RA1's really are like a grippy street tire...vs a real race tire in the R6

For what its worth my personal best lap times were very close between the R6 and R1 (original version)
