Except that a shorter trailer in a v-nose configuration isn't really that much lighter. You either need to go all aluminum (big bucks) or get a bigger truck....

Moving to a 3/4 ton truck will not be regretted. If you ever had to slow a 1/2 ton truck and trailer quickly due to Friday night rush hour traffic and some joker locking his brakes ahead of you... That kind of code brown moment will leave you permenantly scarred.

color me confused for a second here. If the trailer and your car will weigh 5000lbs total, how much gear do you carry??? Let's say that somehow you manage to load 1500lbs into the trailer, towing 6500 lbs with a half-ton is completely fine.

I respect what many are saying about the big trucks, but I promise you that if your combined weight for this rig will be 6500 lbs, you do not need a 3/4 ton. Use your half ton, swap out the pads for a better set and next time you change tires, upgrade to xl units. Make sure you also have a WDH/anti-sway hitch.

It is incredibly hard to find an enclosed unit weighing less than 2500. Basically Trailex is the only company that does it (there is one other company but their unit weighs 2300 with plywood floor for a 20footer).

Upgrading or trading to a 3/4 truck will not be cheap no matter how you look at it; plus it will depreciate faster than a good used aluminum trailer.

Ok the list below is what I priced out for a renegade all aluminum trailer. I decided to go with a v nose 22 foot as the v nose is supposed to add 4 feet. orginally I wanted a 24 foot so I hope going to 22 with the v nose will give me enough room.

The box is 22 x 8.5 and then the nose is supposed to add 4 feet at the tip but I figure almost an average of 2 so close to a 24 ft trailer.

I want enough room to put in a few cabinets and have a place to hang when it rains.

Frank,
I had a Tundra, as you may remember, and a 24' Pace enclosed with tire rack, generator, etc. The Tundra had springs and an added sway bar. The engine was strong enough, and it towed flat with load leveling hitch. It is a great light truck, and I could recommend it for an enclosed Trailex. But the brakes were not up to the task, and I had a few scary moments. Driving to and from the track (VIR, WG) became the most dangerous part of the weekend. All told, I've probably towed 75k miles with an Explorer, F150 and the Tundra. I switched to an F250 Diesel, and now I know what everyone is talking about. There is a serious safety difference between towing with an F-150 and a bigger heavier truck with better brakes. I'd recommend either getting both at the same time or getting an enclosed Trailex ( which are really nice trailers)
See you at MO.

Chuck good to hear from you, Need to see more of you. To your point, I did order the trailer for now empty, I will not load it up with cabinets till next year so empty its 3100. with the car i will be around 6,000 so for the remainder of the year i should be good to go, but if I add the wt of cabinets, tire race and so it it will be upgrade time..

If I go 10% on the tongue weight that puts me at 800lbs If I go to 12% that is closer to 950. So I will have to check.

Was going to go with the anti sway bars and will like put in a extra spring.

Jr, it sounds like you feel the trade off between losing the extra room in the V nose it worth it for the handling that you get out of the improved arow?
Wow, my regular 24ft V nose had a dry weight of 4000 so you are not saving to much at 3500.

The V nose is better for towing mpg and it actually gives you a bit more room up front (mine is 26 ft long but the box is 24ft so they classify it a 24ft.)

I have my enclosed for sale now in the classifieds becasue I need to go bigger. They can be shipped. If you go with somehting like mine they I would do a weight distribution hitch with sway control or you can always go F250/350

Good luck!

Funny thing--I'm doing all my towing lately with a little ol' 15 year old 1K lb. open trailer for the past year. Either the Spec Miata, or the 993 faux RS on it, so the weight it 3300-4000 lbs. Can't feel it at all behind the long wheelbase F350. Which is refreshing. Accelerate, stop, no drama. And 14MPG as a bonus, even on reformulated diesel! (Barely 8MPG with the stacker.)
