Unreal.

It's crazy to actually think that the cage 'builder' (I use the term loosely here ) would allow someone to run that.

I'd like to hear TMG's response...

One of the worst I have seen - other than...

Photos of a Honda where they built a harness bar from exhaust tubing.
A well known brand of kit car where the cage had been tack welded and they forgot to finish the job. Unfortunately that one was discovered in a crash that resulted in injury that should not have happened. It least that was a mistake and not intentional negligence.

While this would seem like a good practice, I have seen many rollcages passed thru tech with roll cages that are improperly and incompletely welded all the way around each and every tube.
I am not saying every Scrut. isn't capable, just that many still leave something to be desired.

since it takes so long to do an inspection for a 1st log book, they are usually happier to do it ahead of time. than at the track on a race weekend.

these guys?

Thats a big part of the problem, people buy a tube or pipe bender, not even a mandrel bender, and can put down a bead and WA-LA..... POOF..... they are now a cage builder. - I don't think so.

Wow. I don't think it's a cage, it's conceptual art.

Personally, I'd get the SCCA inspection, even if you never ran SCCA.

my experience is most of the marshals at some point were SCCA certified. They seem to set standards for car safety. (other than FIA. ).

if its good enough for SCCA, its probably good for everyone else.

-but I think all you needed to do was look at a few welds and see this was a poor effort. I can understand the tube size issue, if they were building to NASA or some other GCR rule book. but those welds.... no excuse for that.

those other cars look decent and seem to have a good history... I wonder if their welder quit.

Seriously, I have seen many SCCA cars, and NASA cars, that have passed many annual inspection that should not have. They really don't check as good as they should. Lets talk weld inspection alone, how do you properly check a weld once it's been painted ?
Many SCCA/NASA/PCA/BMW cages I have seen have tubes with welds that are not 360 degree welds, the obvious question is why ? The answer is simple, it takes time and is harder to get all the welds 360 degree, many "roll cage builders" don't have the knowledge how to do it.
Me personally, I'll take the roof off, glass out, cut holes in the floor to drop the cage thru, etc etc. Then gee, my cages suddenly cost more, want to guess why ? It takes me more time, more work.
I don't want a cage that is just good enough for SCCA, or everyone else, I want a cage that is good enough to get me and or my customers to work on Monday !

I should clarify, I don't think the SCCA inspection is a bad thing,it will make sure they don't have any issues, I just don't think that their inspection is enough.

Huh? I have nothing to add here. I am by no means a cage expert of any sort. So I'm staying out of it. Plus, I can't get the Bimmerforums thread to open to see the picture link.

I just figured you may have seen a few cages and have something to offer from what you've seen.

I think this link has evolved past the one cage shown in the original post.
Oh, and you can see it here as well.

You mean Missconceptual art.

What has been seen cannot be unseen. Be glad you had this cut out. All that planning undone by poor handwork
