Default R888 on a 76 911

Hi there,

I am looking to switch to R compound tires on my 76 911 track car. Has anyone had experience running Toyo R888 tires on an older Porsche? It is a track purpose car that is currently running Bridgestone Potenza's.

I am running solo now (White) and ran most of last season here in the NE solo. I do know that the prior owner of the car ran NT-01s on the car with great success.

I have read through the various threads, but am looking for anyone with recent experience.

Thanks
Nick

I run R888 on a 914-6 track car. DO yourself a favor go with the Toyo RA 1's. The R888's suck!! The only reason I switched is because toyo discontinued the RA-1's and have since brought them back. By the way Beautiful car!!!

Hey Nick! Just as a data point, I think I'm going to RA-1s next year primarily because from what I've been able to glean from various sources they will give you good adhesion without heat cycling out. Especially if the wifey dirves the track beast in back to back sessions. Awesome glamor shot of your ride, I'm jonesing for some track time but looking out the window is very depressing right now. It appears the "spring IS a long time coming" from this vantage point.

Hi Dennis. How are things? Yes, the snow is not great for driving our track cars, but skiing, playing in the snow, XC skiing... Plenty of things to keep me busy.

The tire question is interesting. A lot of what I have read regarding the RA-1 vs R888 is interesting. Early on the tire pressure of the R888 were stated too high. Everyone seems to indicate that the RA1 is a better tire.

The car is in the shop getting a LSD, rebuilt gears (2,3 and 4). It should be a fun year

BTW: are you going to Canada this year? I had mentioned last year the possibility of renting a house large enough for a few couples/families. You interested?

Nick

Is it a track-only car? Then just go to Hoosier R6's and be done with it.. need to have camber/toe set properly to get the most out of them though. If street driven (or if on a budget) then RA-1's followed by R888's..

If it were just me driving, then I would go the hoosier route. My son (18) is also driving, and he just graduated to Yellow (DE). At this point, I would be more comfortable not having him on Hoosiers, and the PCA groups around here frown somewhat. Then again, Dennis started out on Hoosiers.

I used the RA-1's in the past and R888's now.

I preferred the RA1's and ran them at full depth, a little squirmy for the first few sessions but they had great grip until the cords.

The R888's give up much sooner in my experience.

I seem to be the exception...
I have used both the NT-01 and R888 on my '93 C2, and I like the R888 better for both DE and Auto-x. I find that the R888 communicates better than the NT-01. For auto-x I got faster not slower compared to competitors that made no changes when I went from the NT-01s to the R888s.
Also, since I drive to and from events on them, I like that the R888 is better if the road is wet.

BTW, I use a 225-45-17 and 255-40-17.

for track only - hoosier R6 will give best grip, kumho v710 will give second best grip but will last 2-3 times longer than R6.

also as we are on topic - there are some RA1 on sale here right now.

for a right price any r-comp is a good enough tire.

I have R888's on my 76 now and I also drive to and from the track with the occasional miles to and from starbucks or a car meet. They're not bad at all, and like said before any R-comp will be good. In competition I wouldn't go with them though, It'd be R6's or V710's. They've lasted a while and still hold very well. I'm happy with them but I don't know if I'd buy them again.
