Default VW/Porsche to run Nascar???

Autoweek - Volkswagen is poised to explore the possibility of entering NASCAR by the middle of this decade. Matthias Muller, the new CEO of Porsche, which is part of the Volkswagen Group, is interested in opening discussions with NASCAR about entering stock-car racing. A NASCAR official has confirmed that his organization has scheduled meetings with Volkswagen in January.

A year ago at Homestead, former world-class driver Hans-Joachim Stuck said VW had no interest in NASCAR. But in a recent interview with Financial Times Deutschland, he discussed the possibility of entering Formula One (since denied) and NASCAR.

VW chairman Martin Winterkorn has said he wants to pass Toyota and General Motors for global sales supremacy by 2018, and has suggested that NASCAR's “marketing platform” might be part of accomplishing that.

There is no marketing logic IMO to either VW or Porsche being involved in NASCAR. It appears that VW thinks mimicking Toyota will some how improve their dismal U.S. sales. Unfortunately this is not true.

I don't care what VW does, but if they put a Porsche badge on a NASCAR I will protest. I'm disgusted with this Mueller guy already.

You won't see Porsche in NASCAR. VW is desparate to get their U.S. sales up but NASCAR is not the means to correct their product/dealer issues which is the only means they have to increase sales IMO.

If they're smart they'll just hold out until DTM runs in the states with Grand Am and jump in the mix...

I suspect Audi would be the DTM brand in the U.S. just like in Urrup. VW has nothing for DTM. Porsche should stick with ALMS/GT racing in the U.S. IMO and perhaps sell F1 engines. Then they get the prestige of F1 without losing money.

+1. I've heard nothing but bad news how dealers treat customers and warranty. Fix the cars, treat the customer with respect and warranty the cars when the fail, then you'll sell cars.

+1 I agree. VW makes some cool cars, if they would just learn something about customer service, they'll be fine.

the other problem is that all their marketing/advertising is geared toward teenagers and college kids. These are not the people that have money to buy a new car, especially in today's economy when many college grads are struggling to get a job (VW's are not exactly cheap either).

Porsche has been involved with NASCAR before. Granted the IROC series was not a NASCAR event but have you checked out the prices of a IROC 911 lately?

Wiki says this:
International Race of Champions, better known as IROC, was an auto racing competition, promoted as an equivalent of an All-Star Game or The Masters. Drivers raced identically-prepared stock cars set up by a single team of mechanics in an effort to make the race purely a test of driver ability. It was run with a small field of invited drivers (6-12). It was created and developed in 1972 by David Lockton, the developer of the Ontario Motor Speedway, and launched in 1973 with Mark Donohue being the first driver to win the championship, in 1974. The cars used that year were Porsche Carrera RSRs. Donohue's win in the fourth and last race of that season was his last win as he died in a Formula One practice the next season. The series was not run in 1981, 1982, or 1983.

In 2007, IROC could not find a sponsor and postponed the first two races at Daytona and Texas.[1] IROC went on hiatus for 2007 hoping to return with sponsor in 2008. In March 2008, IROC auctioned off its tools, equipment, cars, and memorabilia, and went out of business.[2]

[edit] Drivers
The drivers invited were from a broad range of racing disciplines: NASCAR, Indy cars, sports car racing, and on rare occasions, WoO, and drag racing. Criteria for invitation was very loose, but typically consisted of recent season champions of the respective series, and individual winners of big events (Indy, Daytona, etc.)

Due to its fundamental stock car formula, and the majority of racing being contested on ovals, the series was often dominated by NASCAR participants. The last non-NASCAR champion of the series was Al Unser, Jr. in 1988. Although open wheel drivers have had successes, as of 2005[update], drivers from road racing series had only won two races in the history of IROC. Despite its name, the IROC was closely associated with North American racing culture; its appeal to drivers from international series like Formula One was negligible, especially in more recent editions.

Why? That wouldn't expand their market at all. DTM has a very limited potential following in the US compared to NASCAR.
