Interesting. Do you (or does anybody, for that matter) know anything about Harrington rods/spinal fusion in relation to head & neck restraints in motorsports?
I'm not aware of any direct comparison, but the function of the device in both settings is the same in that it serves to take load off the bone, or somehow control it in an optimal fashion. The load conditions, however, could not be more different. In spinal fixation the device is subject to fatigue loading over a period of years. In a head and neck restraint it is a one-time load that peaks at about 50ms post impact.
