Good job! I don't see why you were penalized for getting hit. Friday's qual race was bad luck for me too, in 944-Spec... I'm the red 944 that got hit on the straight, took out braking marker #1, and ended up in the wall. Got most of it fixed well enough (thanks to help from my other 944 drivers!), but had to miss out on the big race Saturday because my left rear alignment was over an inch toed-out and the car was frightening in left turns... nearly wrecked just at pit-out and couldn't even keep up with the pace lap. I think it's time to find a new hobby...

Just asking!

Bump-drafting is legal, as long as it is done properly, and often encouraged by the driver getting the bump. It can be pretty helpful in the lower-powered classes, especially at fast tracks like Miller's outer loop. Just do it square, and don't do it into the braking zones, or stuff goes bad real fast.

Thanks for sharing the video! Really cool to see just how close the racing is. I am sure those laps took a lot out of you as it is just soooo close. Really cool stuff!

Just have to know before entering the class. I recently raced with the 944 Cup at the Nationals at VIR with SCCA Pro Racing (WC weekend) and it was not allowed.

I guess it is just a matter of being ready to have, mmmh, ugly bumpers. Not so PCA Club Racing spirit. But if its in the contract, then why not!

Are you running a "pro" motor? How about the top 5, do you know what kind of motor they're running?

Yes, I'm running a Race Engineering motor, and so were 3 of the top 4 in this race. They retail for $5-$6K.

What's the competitive lifespan of a motor like so? I'm thinking of getting into SM and I want to run up front(regionally, possibly nationally) so I'm trying to get a feel of what's necessary or not.

Good question. The builder says they need to be refreshed annually, assuming lots of racing. Some users seem to get several seasons out of them.

If you want to run up front nationally you must have a 1999 or 2000 car. The rule book favors them significantly right now, and that doesn't seem to be about to change.

I thought the 10' rule book favored the early 1.6 cars?? I guess it changes every year?

What's the price of a refresh?

FYI - this race will be televised on the Versus network, next Tuesday at 5:30PM Eastern time.

The producer has my in car footage, so I'm hoping to get some good coverage.

Oh, you can keep your '95. You just won't win. ;-)

Obligatory plug for Spec Racer Ford. 1985 to 2010 models have an equal chance of winning. That said, I have heard that the SRF nationals racers often buy a few sealed engines and put them on a dyno to pick the one with the most glorious torque curve.

PS: That video is really worth watching. With a wide, flat track like that, you can use an outside maneuver to pull even and get the guy on the next turn in the other direction. Minutes 39-40 are classic.
