DE Car 911 or Cayman S
My friend has a 944 turbo and is looking to upgrade for DE and DD.
He is looking at Cayman S or 996 911.
Likes the cayman for the price and low miles.
What do you think. He is in white first year of DE's
Thanks for the help.

Does he have preference in styling or is the ultimate goal the better track car?
IMO he will be faster in the Cayman S and will have less issues with RMS problems.

Both are very good track platforms, I favor the 996 since I have one... safe, fast and fun. 996's prices make them a fairly affordable track car. The stock Cayman S handles better than a stock 996, over all easier to drive. Having said that the 996 is more fun to drive.
Drive them both, see what you think. You can search RL for the various track mods. needed.

Cayman S
I may be partial but . . .
I was faced with a similar choice (used Cayman S vs used 996) a couple of years ago and, despite the fact that I had always wanted a 911, I chose the Cayman without any regrets. For a sports car, it is a comfortable and practical daily driver, and it is great on the track.
There have been some issues with the 1st generation Caymans on the track (oil ingestion/starvation, power steering pump failures), usually when driven very hard on R-comps. I have been doing 12-15 track days/year (recently promoted to advanced run groups), and haven't experienced any major issues. :knock on wood:

I could understand the upgrade for a DD, but I am not sure they are much upgrade from a DE perspective.
A 220-250hp 944T, if improved properly, suspension wise (its best to leave the motor alone imho), will be a very quick and reliable car track car. It will also be a cheaper car to "insure" at the track, or walk away from should it be banged up badly. That is one reason why so many track cars are as old as they are.
My preference is the 996, but be sure to have your friend read all the good and bad about the motors that come in both cars.

Chocolate or vanilla? They are both great track cars, and both share the same issues with the engine. He just should drive both and decide which one he would have more fun in, and which makes the better DD for him.

I started in Green with a Cayman S then bought a 1987 911 because I really wanted to learn how to drive
The Cayman S would be much easier to drive fast, the 911 would probably make you a better driver........

Paolo, that was a smart move. The modern 911 has much of the oversteer dialed out of it so your learning a lot more in your car. BTW the track record at Summit was lowered again this weekend in GTS3 to 1:20.4 on a 90deg day.

Yah, but Josh beat that time!! I got the first race he got away in traffic 2nd race and it ended 10mins early. Need that race engine 254hp is not enough for GTS3. Going Motec so I can run PCA too.
