Default New Reasonably Priced Digital Video Camera at OG Racing

Fellow Rlisters:
We have been field testing pre-production versions of the RePlay XD digital video camera for several months in both race and drivers education environments in several different cars. The manufacturer has made improvements to the production version based on our recommendations. They are due to arrive in August for $189.95. The RePlay records on Micro SD cards up to 16GB. This particular video is of Brian Hair driving the OG Racing Spec RX-7 at NJMP earlier this month. For more information, please contact our sales office at 800-934-9112 or via info@ogracing.com.

Below is a photo of the camera and a link to some video recorded using the RePlay Camera. As you can see it is extremely compact. It is completely self contained and comes with both a lighter and wall charger, and basic mounts. For those of you who already have in car video systems, the RePlay would be a great addition as a second camera to be pointed out the rear window.

How does this device compare with the HD Go Pro?

Found this post googling for more info after seeing the OG fb post (can't find it on the OG site yet.)

Other than size/weight, IMO the gopro still appears a lot better.

brochure specs VGA res video (640x480) - yawn in this day and age. Appears to have a really narrow field of view too. No information on the actual angle or if a wide angle lens will be avail. And what do they mean by water 'resistant'? W/o a spec I suspect its not actually waterproof.

Gopro SD is cheaper. HD isn't that much more expensive (can go w/ 'naked' version to mount to the rollbar.)

No affiliation w/ either.

Agreed. I'm glad because I ordered a HD Go Pro yesterday.

For the cost, this is a very good camera. I also comes with mounts, car and wall charger that also works via USB and a 4GB Micro SD card, and the adapter to insert in the standard SD card slot on all new laptops.

Nice stable image, even in the extremely loud and vibrating Rx-7. I will have two of these at the NJMP PCA Race if anyone would like to try them out.

Mark, Looks nice, thanks for sharing info about a new option to consider. Add me to the list for a try at the NJMP race.

Mark:
You got it. I have DVD-Rs in the mobile office so I can burn the video to DVD in the garage.

Mark,

I would love to try one out at either NASA Summit or the NJMP race. I am considering this one or the CountourHD.

That looks like a very nice option Mark. I have been using Aipteks which are fine but the mount is a weak point. Once it breaks you throw the camera out.

My car shakes a lot (or maybe it's just me) so this looks like it would work better for my set up.

You can't mount that camera in YOUR car.

For those with permanent track cars - having the ability to wire it in to 12v power source would be nice. Constantly recharging batteries is a pain for us (just adds another thing to do).

Both GoPro HD and ContourHD are nice cameras and quite easy to operate.

I run a GoPro in a Cup Car:
- IIRC, GoPro has wider angle than Contour
- Less wind noise (plastic case), microphone works very nice. But I don't have any open windows either...
- Convenient (open the case, take out the camera, download files, charge, put it back in). In other words, the mount doesn't need to be taken on and off.
- I can operate it with gloves on
- Takes 32GB memory

But I'm in no way the Multimedia expert and I'm sure there are some people here who know much more.

Sure you can use it at SP or NJMP. I have two in the car with me. I will be there as well.

+1 for the ContourHD. It is a breeze to use and the results are phenomenal. Its got two really nice features, it beeps when powered on and beeps twice when recording and can be heard with the motor running. The lens can rotate 180 deg and uses a pair of lasers for lining it up.

The wind noise can get bad at higher speeds, but its not so bad as to completely lose the engine note (as mounted on my car). There are some tricks to clean it up, but I've not tried any yet. My other complaint is that it only comes with mounts to attach it parallel to the direct of travel. You'd have to buy separately the articulating mount if you're going to attach it to a complex surface.
