Under new moveable bodywork regulations for next season, drivers will be able to adjust the rear wing from the cockpit as soon as they are two laps into the race. However, the system’s availability will be electronically controlled and it will only be activated when a driver is less than one second behind another at pre-determined points on the track. The system will then be deactivated once the driver brakes. It will be available at all times throughout practice and qualifying.
WTF??? sounds like they can used moveable rear wings, but only on every 3rd tuesday when lined up in between a red and green, but only the lead lap and when the TV cameras are on.

Nobody would bet on an astronomically long shot like that.

Just 4 letters can help everyone get over this race series that has "jumped the shark":

A L M S

Technology development is encouraged and embraced. Oh, there seems to be some competitive racing too, passing isn't primarily dictated by one pit stop.

I agree ALMS is a good series but for those of us who have followed and loved F1 for decades, we want to see it be the epitome of racing that it has always been, not some watered down shadow of itself that these rules makers seem bent on doing. Being "green" should not be the impetus for racing. Also, "racing" and "saving money" is an oxymoron.

Look at this thread. F1 isn't a joke, or cartoon, with it's own greedy mascot? Sorry, I find it hard to be impressed any more.

Well yes , you do have a point about F1 !....

Still find ALMS at best " OK" the group-c and IMSA prototype era , make current Protoype racing look passe. I wish they would go back to having only closed top cars as they did in the past , the open toppers never worked for me....

The last real good prototype season was in 1999.........

As near as I can tell, the FIA does not like passing but they do enjoy casually burning large quantities of car manufacturers money.

It depends on what Max meant when he said he was going to control costs...forcing people to spend huge amounts of money can be viewed as controlling costs.

I just don't get it. I knew it was over when they used the term "Microsoft" when announcing the new 'standard' ECU...

So many good points in this thread. The adjustable wing thing is what gets me; how garish is that?

- If you really want to encourage passing, mandate the switch to turbo engines running at limited boost pressures, restrict the amount of boost a team can run, allow them to turn up the boost but to a certain point for passing but turn it into a fuel economy run. As far as grip and downforce are concerned, the amount of unstable air is really what's screwing with driver's ability to pass. From what I've read, the majority of this doesn't come from wings but from under body aero. I could be wrong but if that is the case, get rid of underbody aerodynamics, mandate only the use of a front and rear wing and slick tires.

- Group C and Can Am are perfect examples about how the formulas for a series that are the least likely to survive in the long term tend to be the more exciting while they last. Unfortunate but true. F1 constantly moves around the rules and has brilliant people to incorporate new ideas that keep the ball moving forward. The problem is, I get the impression that the governing body is running out of ways to stop the engineers. It's like they aren't smart enough to regulate any more...sounds familiar.

- The FIA wastes people's money because in trying to come up with an entirely different formula that works for everyone and provides more parity regardless of financial backing, they're experimenting which is increasing costs. As stupid as this may be, I don't see screwing up this way in a given year to be unforgivable. This is two years in a row now where this has happened. More planning and policy analysis are necessary, but I doubt the guys in charge are losing sleep trying to resolve this.
