Wow, thanks for the great info. This will, at the very least, put the cost in a general range. I have heard that getting an already race prepared car is the way to go for keeping initial costs down. Do most people find this to be true?

In most cases it is cheaper buy a complete car rather than build.
However if you are going to do all the work yourself the cost to build vs by is pretty close. (Of course since you work for free). It takes longer to build it from scratch, but that can give you more knowledge of the car. There are plenty who can help minimize the mistake people make when building resulting a better car out of the box.

Joe's provided a pretty complete run down.
Here a few other data points.
Nick at Bennington Motorsports (www.BENMS.com) sponsors us in the Midwest, and is very reasonable. He does not sponsor us with cash, but discounts his rates to keep the racing affordable.
Rebuilt motor, with all new parts/seals/head redone, etc., and new clutch - $3k.
Rebuilt trans, including servicing LSD - $800 (he has new plates for the LSD if you need them, for a reasonable amount).
He also provides trackside support in the Midwest for $100 per car!
This includes:
-Free food.
-Tire pressure/fluid/lug torque checks, etc. before each session.
-1st hour of diagnostics & service for problems that arise at the track
-$50/hour for each addi'l hour
-Gas at street rates (vs. track rates)
-Pit crew if you enduro
-Access to a complete assortment of spare parts, and mobile machine shop.
Now that Spec racing on a budget!
Nick has swapped entire motors in overnight, replaced rear wheel bearings at the track (requires a press & some serious tools).
For reliability, last year we had 90 possible race start all together. The cars made 89 of them (one broken clutch). Nick helps a lot with keeping cars on track, but the cars are very reliable if you build the motors right to begin with.
We did a 9 hour enduro last year. One set of tires (that had good life left), one set of pads, and 1/2 quart of oil.
We won the last 3 hour enduro overall (passed all the Miatas when they had to make a second stop for fuel). With a 21 gal tank, these cars rule enduros!
Will be doing another 3 hour enduro tomorrow.
