Its likely that the SmartyCam MicroSD card spec is based on Class rather than vendor. SD cards come in a range of classes based on the guaranteed data transfer rate the card can handle.
Class 2 = 2Mbits/sec
Class 4 = 4Mbits/sec
Class 6 = 6Mbits/sec
Video formats typically have a variable bit rate that is determined by a range of factors, including the frame size, frame rate, and how fast the camera's processor can store frames. The SD card needs to be able to keep up with that rate. I'm guessing the SmartyCam would need a Class 4 card. They probably specifcy the card class somewhere.

From the FAQ on the SC site -
"8. The newest SmartyCam are supplied with a 4GB class 2 microSD card: I read in documentation to avoid the class 2 cards. Is this advice no longer relevant?
There are two types of class 2 cards: with constant bitrate and with high bit rate ad latency periods. The first ones are good, te second are not good. We supply the first ones and they work. "

Update is easy on the Smarty Cam IF you load the new firmware file (MUST have the .run extension) on the micro SD card. Hold the right button down on the smarty cam while you push the middle button to turn on the camera. Hold the right button down until you see the penguin on the video screen. release the button and the firmware will update.

No, hitting a button in software labeled "update firmware" is easy. That dance HAD to be invented by someone with an odd sense of humor.. surprised they don't have you stand on one foot while doing it..
