Or split the difference & run 4/32 all the time. That's how I roll.

I race Spec Miata, where the RA-1 is the spec tire. For us, these tires are not capable of running at the front until they're nearly slicks, & they're the fastest right before they cord. Because of this, we're finding that the more shaving the better - for racing.

Its a simple trade off between cost and speed. Shave according to your priority.

Yeah, I want them to last a season of DEs, I am not racing. I think 4/32 is a good compromise.

I just had a set shaved 3/32nds, corded them in 18hc, I'll never go below 4/32nds I think your throwing away rubber at that point, if you are doing DEs I wouldn't even bother, run them full tread, little squirm but they will last forever...

15/128s allows them to break-in faster.

I've settled on 5/32 for shaving. After wearing them in after a session or two they are "perfect".

Agree 100%, and then you are covered if it rains as at full depth they are a VG rain tire. Had a student at Limerock a few weeks ago with them, they were great.

The one time I tried RA1s unshaved two years ago they were terrible. That tall tread block wandered. It took about 3 DEs to wear them down to the point I was happy with them.

I vote no shave. You're in a light car that's easy on tires. Why not try to get max life out of them? As pointed out, if you don't have rains then you'll be real happy you didn't shave them. Do you trailer the car? If not then definitely no shave.
