I just love when all of the safety devices function properly, as here. Note no fire (other than flash).
Same for Sharp at R Atlanta last year.
These ALMS cars are good.

Yeah, Field rocks. That guy is huge entertainment in the first part of his stints. Just GOES for it! Fun to watch.

Glad he's OK.

EDIT: Apparently it wasn't the wing.

Reports from IMSA indicated that high winds, at times over 30mph, likely played a factor in the incident. While Jon initially told medical workers that the rear wing collapsed, team representatives have downplayed the wing actually causing the accident. A punctured tire, though, hasn't been ruled out. Ironically, Field had set the quickest time of the session prior to the devastating crash.

Word now is RR suspension failure. Car and driver will also miss the Sebring race, but return for Long Beach.

After sorting through the damage, the team determined the car experienced a failure to the right rear suspension while traveling in a straight line.

For those that questioned it, the prototype (open cockpit) drovers in ALMS do not wear arm restraints or tethers at all.

The position of Jon's head in the mid-roll photo is quite scary. it looks like his helmet is slapping the cockpit side. It is amazing that he was not more seriously injured. I assume he was wearing a HANS device, but I guess that won't eliminate the lateral head movement.

I've never used one, so does anyone have an opinion?

Very foolish IMO.

Lothar, HANS devices offer significantly more protection from sudden fore/aft movement than they do side to side movement.

This is what the high sides on these cars are designed to do. They limit the side motion of the driver's head. The HANS takes care of forward motion.

I am surprised about the arm restraints for open cars. He is lucky he did not get his arm crushed.
