Default Need help setting up '73 911 and Gt3 cup for rally

Hi,

I intend to run my '73RS and GT3 cup on closed public roads in the Robin Hood Rally. The roads may be worse than the old Lime Rock, maybe even as bad as the last turn at Sebring.

You may notice a familiar racer in the 2nd to last picture.

I just put the biggest torsion bars I could get in the '73, I wonder if I should go back to something softer like 22/29 or even softer.

Also I may need to soften the cup car as it has extremely stiff springs. Probably need to raise the cars a bit too and remove the front splitter?

I have seen someone on Rennlist running a similar RS in Australia, and some people have run the Targa Newfoundland which should be similar. And there were some youtube videos of Gt3 rallying in Europe.

The courses will probably not be too long so I intend on using soft autocross tires so they will work better cold.

Any setup ideas appreciated.

With all the opinionated guys out there I thought someone would have some ideas. Or maybe you think I'm crazy (we all are, really).

Just some thoughts, no experience in Rallys -
For the RS, maybe raise the car up a few mm, 22/28 is a nice setup, used to be the hot setup before the 31/23 combo. Also going with a little less camber may be a good idea, like -2 all around so it doesn't want to toss you as much. Running adjustable shocks Mike? What about tires? R888 or NT01's would be my choice over streets, Hoosier Wets if its raining.

So what are they planning to do? Close off the roads they have listed and let you run a TT on them?

Yes, just like road rally stages they will be closed public roads.

I plan on running the soft autocross compound Hoosier A6 tires on the '73, they should be great.

I think loosening the swaybars fully might help too. I once drove a 911T on a really tight curvy bumpy uphill road and it was AWESOME with no sway bars. I just remembered that road, near the old F-Loles shop, I should drive my '73 over there and try it out for some testing. Also a road in Redding, Gallows Hill road? where Mary Travers lived would be good for testing, not far from my house.

The GT3 cup will be tougher as I can't test it on public roads and it's a beast.

No real help here, but there was a video of people racing a GT3 on ice posted up a while ago. They had somethings they were going to do for the suspension, but I can't remember what. I would think you need it to be very compliant, like softer than Sebring or the old LRP compliant.

Call Scott Giannou. He and his dad run Targa Newfoundland and he also races his SC in PCA D Stock.

Maybe run a setup that's similar to Sebring?

Do they actually think they'll get those roads closed? Some of them are the only routes in the area and detours would be prohibitively long for non rally folk.

Mike, why not call Jack Lewis and pick his brain. I bet he would be more than happy to share his experiences. He built an early 911 last year and raced it in the La Carrera Panamericana. He is also running it in another rally in Mexico, next month I think. 770.849.0302. Jack is very a personable guy and always interested in racing and talking racing.

Good luck in the race.

I am no expert in rallying, but with the 73 I'd stay with the stiff torsions, soften the shocks and raise the ride height to at least stock, if not a little more. I think that would take care of any bumps that would launch or bottom the car. As far as the cup, I'd keep it in the garage for this one.

John Buffum still around to see if he remembers what he ran on his RS back in the Pro Rally days?

Based on their web building skills, I wouldn't be sure of anything that they promise...multiple 8-9 MP images on the front page of a website built with GoDaddy's instant website tools.

Setting up the logistics of filming a TV show involving racing cars on public streets for 10 events in 10 states, and the prizes listed below, but they don't have $1000-1500 to throw at a basic website?

First Prize - a Ferrari F430, approximate worth $250,000
Second Prize - a Porsche 911 Turbo
Third Prize - a Corvette Z51 Convertible
Fourth Prize - your very own set of Steak Knives

Color me skeptical.

Is this Rally really legit? Reading through the website, it smells really fishy to me.

Best of luck! Looking forward to possibly seeing you on tv.
