Default PCA National Instructor Clinic VIR MAY 2010

Spring 2010 Drivers Ed at VIR
PCA - First Settlers
Friday May 21 - Sunday May 23

Virginia International Raceway, Alton, VA

Registration Opens: Mon Feb 22, 2010 12:00A (Eastern time)

http://www.motorsportreg.com/

Please join us for our Spring 2010 Drivers Education (DE) and PCA National Instructor Clinic at VIR in Alton, VA. We will be running the Full Course all 3 days, but please note the changes to our normal schedule/format below:

Friday, 21 May: PCA National DE Instructor Clinic - the clinic is open to all instructors desiring a PCA National DE Instructor certification. PCA membership is not a pre-requisite for attending and receiving PCA National Certification. This day will otherwise be open to solo drivers only for regular DE track time (i.e. White group and above). This track time will also be available for already PCA certified DE Instructors volunteering to serve as "Instructor Mentors/role players". We invite experienced drivers interested in becoming instructors and also our experienced instructors to attend and serve as "instructor mentors" and also receive PCA certification.

Saturday and Sunday 22-23 May: Open to all groups

PCA Instructor Clinic: Conducted by Pete Tremper, PCA National DE Chair, it will consist of four 45-60 minute classroom sessions, each followed by a 45 minute on-track session. There are two categories of “candidates” attending the clinic: Experienced drivers that desire to become instructors, and those already serving as instructors (PCA membership not required) that desire to receive a PCA certification. This latter group will attend the entire clinic and serve as mentors to the instructor candidates during the clinic, serving as role players during the on-track sessions. Additionally, we invite our instructors who are already PCA Certified to assist us and also serve as mentors/role players to our instructor candidates during their on-track sessions. In return, we'll offer you ~2.5 hours of student free track time on Friday. If you are an experienced driver interested in becoming an instructor, please contact our Assistant Chief Track Instructor, Alex Bell, at bella@wbrinsurance.com. Please have your driving “resume” available so he can determine your eligibility to attend the clinic. You will need his approval in order to register for the clinic. Experienced instructors that are on the FSR instructor list and attending the clinic do not need this approval. Space in the clinic is limited, so don’t wait until the last minute to register.

This event is open to all drivers 18 and over with a valid US-issued driver's license.

An instructor will be assigned to Green and Blue Group drivers for Saturday and Sunday. If you are signing up as an Intermediate Solo or Advanced driver, you will be asked for references if you have not run with FSR before. There will be classroom sessions for Green and Blue groups as well.

Registration fees:

Solo Driver Registration (3 days) - $375
For non-instructor solo group drivers: Includes ~2.5 hours of track time on Friday, then a standard DE schedule on Saturday and Sunday (~90 minutes per day).

Student or Solo Driver Registration (2 days) - $275
This is the only option for Green/Blue group drivers and the 2 day option for solo drivers that can’t make it on Fri: Includes ~90 minutes per day of track time (instructed for Green and Blue groups, along with one AM classroom session per day).

Instructor Clinic attendees (3 days) - $250
For Instructor candidates and mentors who are attending the clinic in order to receive a PCA Certification: Includes PCA Instructor Clinic/certification plus at least one additional hour of track time after the clinic on Friday, along with instructor registration for Saturday and Sunday with a student assigned (instructing Saturday and Sunday is part of the requirement for certification).

Instructor/Instructor Mentor Registration (3 days) - $100
For PCA National Certified Instructors who will offer their services as mentors/role players for the clinic attendees. These instructor mentors will role play as students during clinic track sessions, driving their own cars with instructor candidates riding along instructing. They do not need to attend the classroom sessions. Includes ~2.5 hours of “student free” track time on Friday (which includes time while clinic attendees are in class). Includes instructor registration for Saturday and Sunday with a student assigned.

Instructor Registration (3 days) - $225
For instructors who are not participating in the Instructor Clinic on Friday. Includes ~2.5 hours of “student free” track time on Friday and instructor registration on Saturday and Sunday with a student assigned.

Instructor Registration (2 days) - $100
Instructor registration for Saturday and Sunday with a student assigned.

DE Intro (one session) - $50
Includes one classroom session and one instructed on-track session on Saturday beginning at 12PM.

Are you new to DE and on the fence about whether Driver’s Education is for you? FSR now offers a great opportunity for those wanting to get a taste of DE without signing up for the entire event. For a $50 fee, we’ll get you out on the track in your car with an instructor for a single session mid-day on Saturday. Standard DE safety requirements apply, so you’ll need a Snell SA 2000 or newer rated helmet. FSR does not have loaner helmets, so recommend borrowing from a friend.

Ten bucks is a HELL of a deal. I think I'll pass on the Certification and just do this.

Thanks Alex!

Registration is proceeding very well for drivers as well as Instructor Candidates and Mentors. I see other PCA regions as well as members in the BMW and Corvette community signing up. Thanks to everyone for their support! Only 2.5 months to go so please do not wait until the last minute!

Right as Scott said we welcome all drivers. If you instruct for BMW or other car organizations, you would be a good candidate for PCA National Certification. Thanks for asking!

Copied below are the instructions for Mentors and/or Candidates:

2010 Instructor Clinic Information
Instructor Candidates and Mentors
Event Date: Friday May 21, 2010

The following information will help First Settlers Region determine if a person is qualified to participate as either an Instructor Candidate or a Mentor. The curriculum consists of four classroom sessions and four on track sessions, and the on track sessions will involve roll playing between student and instructor.

Instructor Candidate

This person will assume the roll of an instructor and ride in the passenger seat. It will be your job to instruct the student (mentor) in various types of driving conditions. You will be evaluated on your performance by the mentor after each session and at the end of all sessions. Some mentors will not have a car with a passenger seat, so some Instructor Candidates will need to allow the Mentor to drive the candidate’s car. This should not be a problem as we will be driving at slow speeds as though a Green Driver were driving!

Mentor

This person will assume the roll of the student and drive the car. It will be your job to challenge the instructor (candidate) as he/she provides guidance to the student.

1) If the Mentor already has his/her National Instructor Certification, the he/she will have the option of attending the classroom OR he/she can drive in the Open track sessions
2) If the Mentor does not have his/her National Instructor Certification, then he/she MUST attend the classroom sessions

Qualifications for Participation

These additional items are intended to clarify some additional areas of concern.

1) If you have your National Instructor Certification, please provide your Number. Barring any unforeseen problems, it is expected that all National Instructors who wish to Mentor are automatically approved to Mentor our new Candidates.
2) If you have experience instructing with PCA, BMW, NASA, or other organizations, please provide this information. Experienced Instructors can Mentor and they MUST attend the classroom
3) Instructor Candidates with no prior instructing experience must provide a detailed history of their driving experience. This must be on the registration website

http://www.motorsportreg.com/

4) All Candidates and Mentors who DO NOT have their National Certification should have their Chief Track Instructor send an email confirming that they are ready for our program.

(SAMPLE) Schedule for Instructors (Mentors) and Instructor Candidates
8:00 AM Mentors only meeting in Classroom (Tower building)
8:30-9:30 Classroom session #1
9:30-10:15 On-Track Session #1
10:15-11:30 Classroom #2
11:30-12:15 On-Track #2
12:15-1:15 Classroom #3 - Working Lunch
1:15-2:00 On-Track #3
2:00-2:45 Classroom #4
2:45-3:15 On-Track #4 - End of Program
3:15-3:30 Mentors to classroom for final paperwork session. All others open track

Danville has places like Sleep Inn, etc. There are also accomodations at the track. Garage Rooms, The Lodge, and the Villas are all on campus. Call 434-822-2680 to see what is available. The Lodge is good and about $130 per night. www.virnow.com
