I have a 20 foot featherlite and I can fit a 911 and a scooter in it. I would not go too much shorter than that, like you stated maybe an 18ft.
Pros of an open trailer are obviously price, weight, and ease of towing, but I probably went through 3 front windshields on my 944 and maybe 2 on my GT3 from rock chips. Also I have been to two events where cars in a hotel parking lot were keyed and the only people who ended up being safe from the vandalism were those with enclosed trailers (thank God one of these instances was my first weekend with my enclosed). With the enclosed I can also take more stuff to the track without having to load it into my actual tow vehicle. I feel much more organized and also have a place to hang out when the weather takes a bad turn.
I dont think ill ever go back to an open trailer after having the enclosed.
