What Tire Sizes Would You Pick? 997S
Need new tires again. I've been using Toyo R888 because I can find them in the sizes I need for my 2009 Carrera S. If anyone has any other suggestions on tires PLEASE chime in!
I am thinking it might be cool to use the lower profile..ie less diameter...to gear the car down some with the ALTERNATE sizes I've listed below. I tracked for 2 days on this set up on a 2007 997S but never got enough info or thoughts gathered. Thoughts and opinions please~!
Tires are mounted on CCW C10 9x18 and 12x18
STOCK SIZES.......................................SIZES.............DIAMETER
Front.................................................235-35-19 ........25.5"
Rear..................................................295-30-19.........26"
Rear with certain factory wheels..........305-30-19.........26.3"
SIZE I HAVE BEEN USING
Front ................................................245-40-18..........25.7"
Rear.................................................305-35-18..........26.3"
ALERTNATE SIZE...WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Front ................................................255-35-18..........25.1"
Rear.................................................315-30-18..........25.5"

MPSC is much grippier than the Toyos but they don't last as long. It's a compromise.
FWIW I ran 245/305 RA-1s on my 997S before I got the GT3.

mdrums - Interested in why you are using 18" instead of 19"? I ask because I used a set of 18" with 225/275 Nitto from my 996 on my 997 this summer. Car felt a little "under tired" and I am planning on doing the R888 in 235/305 on 19" wheels for the coming summer.

You might want to try the Nitto NT-01s. I think that they work better than the R888s and you can get a 245/315 x 18" combo that is about 25.4" overall diameter.

JJ99c2, I am using 9x18 front and 12x18 rear on my 997S because I got a great deal on some like new CCW wheels from Mooty on this forum. Plus a lot of other guys use 18"s on their 997S and 997 GT3's. Also I was thinking the higher profile side wall would help with the bumps at Sebring and when in a corner I have been told by many there is more tire contact patch with the 18"s. Why? not sure of the exact physics answers for that. Plus 18's are lighter than 19's but really who cares this is just a DE.
I was thinking of selling my CCW C10's and trying to buy Riley's 19" Volks he has for sale on this forum...but...never got around to advertising them.
So since I still have the 18's I need to figure out which set size of tires I should get.

Mike,
You can still get the Toyo RA1s in 245/305, which is what I'm running now. More tire than the R888, which I ran early in the season. Ran some incredibly "smoking" laps at Watkins Glen and Lime Rock with the RA1s. I wonder about the 335 RA1, which fits a 12" rim and is 1" wider at 13.5. I don't know that you could get enough heat into them.
Also know some guys running the Nitto NT01 (on 11" rims) and they report they haven't had issues with ABS / PSM due to the smaller rear tire diameter. It's only 25.35" around, which is a full 1" too little. Also, the approved rim is 10.5-11.5 with 11 being optimal. Basically, their 245/315 are the same width / contact patch as the Toyo RA1 in 245/305.
Wish Michelin still made the better rear Cup. 235/295 just doesn't feel like enough.
What about R888 in 255 front and 335 rear for that 26" rear diameter?

Ron, I am thinking about the R888 in 255 front and 315 rear, the my 1st post at the top...I hilighted my alternative size in red. I know they fit on my car. The 255/315 combo is .4" smaller diameter than stock...but...like the stock diameter they are smaller diameter in front. I think that if you keep the front and rear diameter DIFFERENCE around the same as stock your ABS will be OK. Stock front to rear diamter difference is .5" and the 255/315 combo is .4" and the 245/305 combo is .6" front to rear diameter difference and we all know that size works well.
Ron, I thought your Volk Wheels are 19's. What wheel are you running now?
So you like RA1's better than R888's? More grip, cheap price whats the deal?

Larry, I checked out the Nitto's and they only have 1 rear size 315-30-18 which is 25.5 diameter. This will not match up with the 245-40-18 front which is a larger diameter of 25.7. Nitto does not have a 255-35-18. With the 997 car the front has to be a smaller diameter than the rear or you will have ABS problems with the computer due to wheel speed differences so I am told. So Nitto is out.
